Was tempted to remove the wheels for mock up, to get these under the arches, decided naaaahhhh.

But they are rather tall at 17”



Just use your imagination, remember it’s the roughest of mock ups, and will not be happening.

Afternoon started with cutting a clothes rail in half.

Nice profile.



Empty gas bottle, steel rod, profile.



Should work. Looks OK from here.





Then transfer the sides to sheet metal.





And the result.



Pretty happy, having prepped both sides.

I popped over to one of my neighbours who is building a retirement car.

His little shed....







Edge drawn onto the plates.





Tested on a bit of previously rolled scrap, the inverted J or walking stick was my first attempt.
In order to get the feeling as I have never touched or used a bead roller.



Starting out with the roller.



First one done.

Happy with that.



Back home, just laid out.

Bit of fine tuning before welding together.



Next up, paint part of the rods with Hammerite, try leave it alone before threading the nets on, and then weld frame and plates together.

And then paint the lot with Hammerite.

A few little things done today.

One of them was just relaxing and wasting time.

Also painted the metal bits from yesterday’s prep in black Hammerite

Decided on black as it’s easier to patch up once I do the welding to get the bits together.

10 plus years parked outside in all weathers next to a shop in Scotland has to have its toll.

Sadly, a 90’s built, U.K. Kitcar with 70’s and 80’s Ford parts and bits of wiring of suspect origin is bound to break your heart at some point.

No matter how optimistic you may be feeling.

Today I wanted to get started with removing the front screen in order to start creating the support for the fold down Land Rover screen.

Sallys Uncle Bob the hoarder popped in for a couple of hours to check up on my progress and to see if I had space for one of his stationary engines or an Austin A35 he has been trying to get me to take, so my plans were a bit scuppered.

But we rolled it down to the garage.



Originally the car had a frame from the roll bar to the screen.....

Radio-tape fitted.

That thankfully fell off along the way from Scotland while Fil was recovering it

But there is a mess of wires, including some bits I do not recognise, left over.....

They need to be removed, but are fibreglassed into the frame.



When I tried to remove the Land Rover mirrors though, they were not attached in an obvious way, so I found there was a channel up the side of the body with small rusty nuts, but not at all accessible......

So a bit of digging, pulling, pushing....

Wet plywood, rusty screws that would not screw out, but a couple of long screwdrivers later....

More rust down the bottom.



Result.



Still no progress on the frame or the mirrors.



Either side.



At least they are open.

Next job will be to hire a 12 year old contortionist mechanic to reach up there under the dash, up he A-Pillar to undo those nuts.

Then the wires to be unthreaded, maybe.

Little bit every day

Painted the outsides of the panels.

Happy with the brush results.

When I tack them to the frame it will be on a wet cloth to minimise heat distribution and damage.
Should work.

Nice fabbin' on the wind screens and body nets for your Jeep. It's cool but also scary that we're both building Jeeps at the same time. You are much further along than me but they will both be great cruisers in their own time.

Funny how the little things make a difference

DVLA has been hit by Covid as much as any other government body.

And because the seller had lost his V5c document in a house move it cost me £25.00 by cheque and a paper written application to get it re-issued to me. This process takes even longer.

I did not want to spend too much on the Rezin Rockit before paperwork was also in order.

Well............



Interesting to note it is down as a 4x4 and also it’s gross mass.

If only the carport guy (whom I texted this morning again) would come and get the steel structure up so I can get the roof done.

Thank you, yes I do start a few and normally finish them, the fabbing is not a lot or big stuff like you do, but its progress in a way that still is going the right way.

I do hope that I will do the C10 which I have not forgotten, justice when I start back on it too.

Not sure if this should be on here, or in the Galaxy thread. As it kinda fits both.

But as the Rezin Rockit will be under the roof once it is up, I guess here is fine.

Steel guy said he will be here up to about 8.30 lets see when he gets here.

He is coming with a Sprinter pickup, so needs to reverse down the drive and get the steels down to site.

I needed to remove the caravans, trailer, scooter, mixer and other bits, up to the lawn, which is very wet and soggy.



Once cleared, I decided to make a “Selfie stick” and at 5 meters long, it got the job kinda done, but of course a drone would be better equipped to do the job.

Guys at my house by 7.45 and on site from 7.50

Been a long time coming.

So the truck was a bit wider than he thought..... poop.



So carrying all the shorter beams down, followed by using the cart Fil “Sparkplug” brought over to run one down, but it was almost the same width as the concrete strips, followed by using a narrower one to run the longer 6.5meter main front beam down.

It all got down there.







Followed by fetching the smaller van from over the street and getting it down to the bottom and unloading

So the steel guys were gone by 13.45 which men’s they spent a total of 5 hrs on site.

What was amazing, and experienced by me too, was how the whole thing just bolted together so easily.

Keep in mind, I had done the foundations and upright posts, and between me and the lodgers, we had cut and welded the top plates twice and still delivered a base that was squared up on four corners, despite the posts not being equidistant from each other.

Pretty impressed, even if I say so that it came out that well for a start.

Followed by Wayne getting all his structures to just fit together without a drill.

So last night, after they had gone and my day finished at 5.00pm this was the view.



High enough from the front to get a tall thing in, and then some.

So.......


For those taking a look in to see progress.




Not a lot today.


But managed to move all my junk Back into place.



Much better.



Then carried on with little jobs, well not that little.

Decided to paint all the uprights as well, to go with the rest of yesterday structure.

I also gave all of the upper structure a second coat of paint as it got damaged and dirtied in transit and erection.






Much happier.

What is the difference.

If you mean plywood with roofing felt as traditional style, then no.

Plan is for high grade, 0.7mm plasticoated industrial profile roofing material in steel.

So typical of weekends, @CraigRK and I were chatting by 06.00 on WhatsApp about our weeks and then progressed to more important stuff.

Like the roof and what materials were needed.

It did not take long before we were in video more and getting sizes down.


So steel structure depth

At 4950 plus a 50mm overhang at the rear and a 500mm stabilised, but unsupported overhang to the front, it gives me a 5.5 meter deep carport.



Rear width on Mickeys boundary, overhanging the woodwork shed by 200mm is 5500mm including a 100mm unsupported overhang to the side.

On the front I offset the one post in order to maximise front access and that is 6500mm or 6.5 meter wide

For those who need to know, the shed overhang and front roof will be getting a small gutter and down pipe to catch whatever run off there is.



Front beam height is 8’1” or 2450mm on the garage side and about 2x or 40mm shorter on the shed side, as the roof is horizontal but the paving drains away gently toward the garage.



Rear beam is 7’5” or 2250mm high on the underside of the beam.




The plan we ended up with to do the quantity calculations.




So black is steel frame.

Red and Green are timbers, all 47x200mm high end C24 carcassing

Orange noggins were planned to be screwed into front timber and then also to blue 50x50 aluminium box section to stabilise unsupported front over reach roofing sheets.

Roofing unfortunately shows a 4-6 week lead time online, so I will call the supplier in the morning to see if there is any way of expediting my small order.

Roofing sheets will be Box Profile Sheets 32/1000 Rib - 0.7mm , PVC Plastisol coated and in Juniper Green.

Been a busy weekend.

Out for dinner, loads done with Sally, and also on the carport frame.

This afternoon I made some chilli oil, using 8 scotch bonnet chillis finely sliced and added to a litre of oil

This will get to steep for a while and get better with time.



Then down to the garage for a bit at 2.30-ish.

The Cortina dash lip fell off in my hand when I tested it.



Pretty rotten, and not looking great.

HOWEVER....... I really like it and will be reinstating it once I figure out the best way to do it.

All of the mounting bolts, which were moulded into the rear, were rusted away significantly





Next up I tried to undo the passenger side mirror, reaching up inside the A-pillar

Had to escalate the process and remove some stainless tabs used to hold the kick panels in place.

Ultimately I broke out the grinder to clean up the rusted studs broken off on the dash, and to remove the ones keeping the stainless tabs that were in the way for trying to get to the mirrors.



Result.

They are fixed up the A pillar, And I had a walking date with Sally, so packed up tools by 4.00pm

Next time the mirrors will hopefully come off.

Looking up the A-pillar, circled where the mirror bolts are.

The angle iron is part of the window frame support.

Thought I may have one.

However........ No idea if it works or not.

If it is US then it’ could be why I have it in an old plastic bag, under the welding table.

Needs a clean up...... and if it works, then I will investigate a pulley system for it.
