What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

ive spent the last few weeks when ever ive had spare time trying to make my power brake conversion work right. anyway, this morning i changed the pedal to m/c ratio and added an intermitant arm between the m/c & pedal. FANTASTIC !!! now I have brakes that stop the truck and the pedal doesnt go to the floor. took the old girl ( not my wife! ) out for about an hour drive and it felt so good. Guess all the work figuring out proper ratios was worth the work

They started putting chemicals on the road here last week, the morning started out at 30 degrees and up into the 50's but it was a nice day!

Drove the 49 pickup up to the lock and dam and meet a buddy of mine. The weather was in the upper 50's with not a cloud in the sky. We sat and swapped lies for about 3 hours. There is a lot of joggers, walkers, and people just parking to take in the view so we got a lot of thumbs up and and few questions. Great day to get out with the ride.

Don't know if this counts but I think I have picked the shop to fit my Ryan Falconer V-12 head on my 292. Only about 2 hours away. He will be dowelling the mains and reinforcing the block in key locations also. He has a full CNC engine mill and has been building "super sixes" for circle track for a long time. He is familiar with the Falconer head. I'm supposed to call him after the first of the year. I have probably talked to 20 shops. He is excited about the project. I have been building cabinets for a 35K square foot house the last few weeks out of state to make truck money. The man that owns the house has hotrods behind glass windows throughout the house with back doors because he drives them.

That would be cool to see, can you get any pics? I built cabinets for 30 years and worked on some great houses, but none with hot rods built in.

I once was in a home where the owner had built a 1929 Model A roadster into the house. The room was once a garage; they remodeled it into a family room and left the car inside. There was no way to remove it without removing a wall.

He's a friend of mine and a country western star. I pitted for him at the local dirt track 30 years ago.
I'm going to have to respect his privacy on this one. He sure has some nice classics and hotrods. Just a regular guy.

There was a guy that bought an abandoned Nike missile base in southern Indiana. He built his home in one of the missile silos and had a '53 Corvette (yes, one of the 300 made) in his living room.

I understand. Wasn't looking for name or location, just sounds cool. I once built a gun cabinet with bullet proof glass for a guy. He had a ton of money in his guns and wanted to see them. He had a nice gun safe but why have them if you can't see them.

Off and on I've been working on converting my gauges from stock to electronic. Getting close to done so thought I'd post a few pics before I finish and forget to take any.

Speedhut speedo. Tape on screen is temporary to help locate face.



Mock up. I have to find a watch repairer to help me connect Speedhut spindle to old needle. Two different diameters plus need to extend spindle.

Cluster gauge a little more involved.

These are Bosch gauges, formerly SunPro. Not the greatest quality but I didn't want to break the bank in my first attempt at this.



Kept original dash lighting as well as new gauge lighting. Don't know yet which combo will work best. Will try to make a harness to simplify number of wires on the back side as well as for ease of connecting and disconnecting when necessary.



Backplate which gauges mount to stands off original cluster housing to keep gauges away from cluster face.



Not a fan of how the face turned out. Had a sign place make up the faces and they followed my instructions. Numbers aline with needles (90 deg range) but the arc radius is wrong compared to the gauge face. Plus numbers need to be farther out. Have to redo this. If this is all I have to redo I'll be quite happy.

nice job on your instrument cluster. i did similar and missed out on upgrading the lighting
mine is no better than oem, in other words marginal at best, always at max dimmer
i should have put a 10 watt LED light in there and dimmed it

I dug out the GMC core support that I had stashed out back and one of the Chevy Core supports that I have and did some figuring out how to end up with a GMC bottom half with a Chevy top half to be able to use the GMC crossmember in my frame rather than swapping crossmembers.

I even worked in a sunset shot when I was out messing with the core supports.

That's an interesting and in some ways tempting thought. Not uncommon that after a project I think to myself "I could make these and sell them". Based on the hours I have in these I would have to become A LOT MORE efficient to keep the price below astronomical. Still.....maybe after I stop flipping houses....something to consider.

Interesting comparison and nice sunset. I need to move my radiator in my 53 3100 as far forward as possible. Maybe a little snip snip buzz buzz.

I figured out that that doesn't actually move the radiator forward like I thought. It save me from having to change the front crossmember.
