Re: Daverods project 66
Do you think a 4 speed would be stronger than a 3 speed?

Re: Daverods project 66
I've not had a 3 speed, but the SM420's and SM465's are pretty damn tough.
You still only have 3 forward gears that you use most of the time, but you have the low 1st gear for those times when you need that extra low gear for pulling.

Re: Daverods project 66
The 3 speed I have is a 344. I never pull anything so I don't think a 4 speed would be any better, unless it's a lot stronger. Most the time with a 4 speed you take off in second anyway.

Re: Daverods project 66
I think you will still have to cut off the bump stop, since it sticks up over a 1 1/2" Best thing to do is just put it together and ley it on the floor. And about the steering look at the post before mine. I've sent you those pics before!

Re: Daverods project 66
What's the update on the transmission? Now that it is out.....Keep me posted-- mine comes out maybe next week if time and weather permits.
Something to add to "This I Know thread"--- "Take the crossmember out and un-bolt the bell housing...."

Re: Daverods project 66
I did'nt have to remove the cross member. Once I saw I could unbolt the bell housing it came right out. The bolts for the bell housing where on the inside. It like a 2 part bell housing. Unbolt it from the engine, then slid it back enough to get a wrench inside to undo the two bolts on the side. Unbolt the last two transmission bolts and bam it's out. I took it down this afternoon should know tomrorrow.

Re: Daverods project 66
My understanding is that the 63-87 are all the same, 63-72 use pressed in bushings. Then you know the ball joints are diffrent from 63-70; 71-72; 73-87

Re: Daverods project 66
I was wondering if the arms are the same except for the bushings I wonder why the ball joints are different? I need to get new ball joints. Just want to make sure I get the right ones.

Re: Daverods project 66
balljoints are diffrent because the spindles are diffrent. You know GM has to change something to make more money. It just depends on what spindles you wanna use, if your going 5 lug go look for some 73+ spindles, the other 2 are 6 lug.

Re: Daverods project 66
71 & 72 were the first year of standard issue disc brakes and are 5 lug. I think that I heard that the 71 and 72 were steel on steel in the upper and lower control shaft threaded ends and that 73 and up were rubber mounted in the shaft ends. Does yours have grease zerks in the ends??? if so, it is probably is 71/72,
Bubba

Re: Daverods project 66
Man i keep forgetting that 71-72 are 5 lug, I need to drill that in my brain. But if your going to go 5 lug go with the 73-87 since it doesn't use the crazy bushings.
