Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

now we didn’t get the speedometer in, I forgot a light socket in my Tahoe. But the quad gauge sure looks great!
Tomorrow: install speedometer and rework tail lights. (I’m not happy with the installation)

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

so today I had Christian change the tail light disks from surface mount to mounting inside the bedrail. I am much happier with the appearance of them now!

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

And of course here is Wyatt, hard at work, Wiring this thing!
The gauges are installed and all the interior wiring is complete
The seat was installed to mark the holes.
Tomorrow bolt the seat down, find the mysterious vacuum leak that’s bogging the engine down at high rpm, and get the window reveal trim installed.

We got a whole bunch of little stuff done today, we also discovered that several of the AC fittings we crimped were non O-ring. The proper fittings were ordered. Don’t know how they got mixed in my AC fittings, I’ve gone through them all so this won’t happen again!
Settled ride height is right at 5.25
Here’s the overall look of the truck
Here’s a shot of the interior And a shot of the dash, nearly complete

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

we had to remove the intake for the mechanical water and oil metric to SAE adapters
Wyatt pushed the button to set the odometer and the lens cracked. We’ll replace it with plexiglass if you insist, but getting those gauges in really sucks. Wyatt's excuse was it gives it character, and I have to say I don’t disagree.

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

We were having issues with the tail lights, discovered we had no continuity between the seat bolt and the neg post on the battery. Means bad body ground. So we replaced the 10ga ground with 4ga battery cable. That solved most of the problems. Still have no power to the right turn, I suspect column wiring, will check tomorrow.
We also got the tail lights installed today.

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

We had a horrible day at the shop today! I think we actually managed to go backwards!
We struggled with the turn signals all day to no avail (there’s a ground issue somewhere, but I’ll be damned if I can find it)
so we decided to do things we could accomplish, the MAF Adapter got here yesterday so we put it on
then we put together and installed the temp sending unit
Thought we’d start it to see that it ran better. Turned the key and nothing! So we finally discovered that the starter had gone bad and grounded out the windings. Changed it, and it made no difference. So for the first time ever we are working Saturday, not on my projects, but this truck! I am bringing in my expert.

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

we got the truck running. The battery had 12v but no cranking amps.
https://www.facebook.com/10635701173...70777727858252
We also fixed the signals. Those front signals looked primo on the ouside, but were corroded hot garbage on the inside! After totally disasembling them, and several hours of cleanup/rebuilding them, they work!

And now for the not so good news. When we went to back it out, no reverse. Now, reverse worked before the fire. Apon inspection it appears that the PRnD switch got a little toasty and may have caused some internal damage.

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

Upon further research we discovered that even in limp mode with no wires connected it should have drive and reverse. It was decided that the transmission was bad. So we pulled it and tomorrow we’ll put a new one in.
We also discovered a leak on the back of the water pump, so that will need to be pulled and replaced.

Tell me about it! Every time we fix something, two more things go wrong! I’ve never built a truck that put up such a fight against being made roadworthy!

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

Here’s the new transmission
We’re about 95% done installing it. All that’s left is the exhaust and driveshaft.
Tomorrow we’ll finish that and put in the new water pump.

Re: Orson the 49 GMC ~ Chris C.

We found a leaky rear brake line we had to deal with, it’s fixed
we are going in at 10 instead of noon, to change out that water pump
