Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Hi you all !
I'm back So to get right to the point where I left: I did get the swing pedal in with the bracket between firewall and steering column: I even managed to get the parkingbrake assembly at it's original place! I don't know if I can get the parkingbrake lever to work, but I find it a very nice item to have in the truck. The swing pedal is made from the original brake and clutch pedal, welded together, you see I recycle stuff

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks Doug and Jim, happy to be wrenching again!!
Those last pics are before the body went down. So, now with the new things, I was given a nice old steering wheel from my buddy Niels, made it fit to an adapter so I can get it on the column of the old Chevy Van: I had a few aluminium things lying around that I could use to make a large shim between the steeringwheel and the adapter: I grinded (or ground, what is it??) the back of the wheel flat, and turned a shim to get the whole surface to be used at the adapter: Fits great! Next I put the column in to see what modifications I have to make: You see, the column is a bit long.... I have to shorten it by 5,5" Anybody did this or have good tips?? I did a search on this, but didn't get a step by step... Only thing they all say is to sleeve the steering shaft. That isn't so hard to do Maybe I just go ahead with it and see where it ends, worst thing what can happen is to buy a new one I must say, it looks good in there Just make my own hornring to finish it off.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Yep, VW, me as an old VW driver thought it was a good idea
Plus I can't afford a Bell Air steering wheel.... It has the right diameter, looks old and it will be great when finished!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Started slowly today, as always
Last Friday I cleaned the underside, put some rust converter and later some primer on it. So this morning (at noon....) I sealed the whole underside of the body, the cowls and the firewall. After sealing, while I was waiting the seal to dry, I started on the trans cover. The old one is butchered by the PO, so I thought of making a new one: You see the old one isn't much anymore. I took some 14 gauge steel and the old cover, I will marry the two When the sealing was dry, I primered the underside: Now let the primer dry, then I will spray stoneguard (paintable) rubber undercoating, and after that a layer or two, three black paint. I then have three layers of primer, undercoating and a few layers black paint. I think that should do it for a while. When that's finished, I will put the engine back in place for the last time Moving forward again

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
That's going to be a great truck when you get it back on the road. What kind of primer is that? Definitely should not rust after you put all the coatings on.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
It's just Hammerite. The rust converter is from Wurth.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Small update from last Friday:
The whole underside has recieved 1 layer of rust converter, 1 layer of primer, all seams are sealed with paintable body kit, 1 layer of primer again, sprayed over with paintable underbody rubber coating, after all was dry, I put 3 layers of shiny black paint over that Now it all is drying These pics are taken after one layer of shiny black, after that there are two more layers. Next is to clean the engine, replace the timingcover with seals, put on some headers and place it back in the frame. Then I must make an exhaust ( I made a new thread about where to place the mufflers...) Plumb the brakes, shorten the steeringcolumn, and.....and......and.... We're getting there in the end

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Been busy with the engine today.
Cleaned it and bolted a new timingcover with new seals and gaskets. Took all of the unneccessary bits off to get a cleaner look after I'm finished with it. It's got a nice new coat of Chevy Orange, and painted the trans also in that color. Planning is to put the motor back in Monday night....
