Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yep Doug...when I 1st took them apart I was expecting the pins to be some weird size, one off, nobody ever seen one like it,pin....so I was surprised to find that it must be a common size for pins...
Hard to believe how many $$$ it adds to something with the word nos attached to it....

Yeah Greenlee...I looked thru that section at the parts store...they didnt have what i needed though....

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Hey Greg - just in case you’re not really over IHs yet check this out:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...6370194098709/

This one is just down the road from me in Colorado Springs.

PS - I’m enjoying a little bit of Alabama down at Gulf Shores this week. Great weather, just about all the fried fish a guy can eat without exploding and I am out of the Colorado winter for a few days!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

got me a few minutes in the shop today...got a little done
got the seat installed...and I must say..for a 60+yr old seat it sits mighty comfortable..
I needed it installed to check for the gas pedal location..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

and I got the gas pedal installed..i had to modify the bracket a little...
I bent the lower portion at a angle to fit the toe board...and straightened the pedal offset some to clear the trans hump..it fits good and works...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Back on my door hinges...
I had noticed some considerable wear on the catch that holds the door open..they were worn bad...so I built them up with weld and just had to guess what they used to look like and ground a new profile on them...I also realized there used to be a roller on the pins....one pin still had a tiny piece of roller jammed under it so it gave me something to go on...I machined a new set from some stainless and reassembled to check fit...the springs arnt on at the moment...still want to work on the roller pockets a little bit..then I'll resandblast em and lay another coat of epoxy on em and I'll call em done...

Looks great, I really like a simple classic looking interior in these old trucks. You should definitely be proud of that truck!

thanks Tigger,Doug,Scott,and old57
its amazing at how simple things were back then..probably less than 10ft of wiring under the dash...just enough stuff to make it work...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well I finally got some time away from work..so I spent the day trying to make some progress...installed the new 4.56s in the front....I think I'm gonna quit right here with the pattern...1st pic is drive side...2nd pic is coast side..I've got 19in/lb pinion rotation and .010 backlash....since the.front will be rarely used I'm good with it...now on to the rear..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Getting ready to setup the rear gears and locker...I knew from welding the new spring perches and shock brackets on the 14b that some warping probably took place ...so I machined a set of fake bearings and stuck them in the diff...a stick of 1-1/2" ss inserted in the housing tells the tale....the pass side if off just a tick ..but the drivers side is off very bad...I still need to machine the outer bushings to know 100% for sure what needs done...

Anybody reading this please take notice..when you weld brackets and whatnot on a axle tube ,it will warp, and needs straightened ...not fixing this will lead to exsissve wear of parts..
1st pic is center bushings
2nd pic is pass side
3rd pic is drivers side..

That's a slick idea on how to check the tubes. I wouldn't have thought to do that.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

thanks Rgun....back when I drag raced and we narrowed rear axles we used this method...doing this has been around for a long time...

Zepp, im going to use acetylene torch to heat the axle tube...ill start in a small spot and quench with water rag...you actually heat it on the side it needs to go...when you heat it itll go the other direction ,and then pull back past where it was...that's the 1st method ill use...as bad as it is I may have to use a press to get it close...
the red arrow shows where on the tube ill heat between spring pad and diff housing...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

got my outer bushing made this afternoon and did a test fit..
luckily the pass side will need nothing done to it
drivers side is a different story...as you can see in the pic.
I made my bushing dual purpose..one side is for test fitting tube straightness, and the smaller side I machined to fit inside the outer axle bearing so I can use it to seat the bearing in when the time comes
pic 1 is bushing
pic2 is pass side with bushing slid into axle tube
pic3 is drivers side to show how far off it is
pic4 is where I heated the axle to make it draw..i only heated it to a cherry red color.i decided to let it air cool instead of using a water quench ...ill let it cool overnight and see where it is in the morning

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well I had to do 5 heat soaks on the tube to get it where it belongs...I expanded my heat zone from around 2in to about 5in...and let it completely cool between each heat cycle
And heres the results... I'm gonna roll with this...
