Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

So i have some strange stuff happening with the truck. I took off from a stop a big bang went off and no power to the rear wheels. Yet the drive line is turning. I jack the truck up and pull the diff cover off no sign of any damage nor any metal in the oil. When i turn the drive line by hand everything works as normal. Spider gears? Its a dana 44 posi.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

Its for sure in gear you can put it in gear and let the clutch out and the drive line spins. Yes i admit i'm pretty hard on the truck especially when i first got it on the road i did one of the biggest burn outs of my life in this thing when the t case was still in it. It was at least 300 feet through 2nd and 3rd fish tailing the hole way on dry pavement lol. I haven't check further but its got to be the rear end the only thing that's throwing me off is that it still rotates the tires when i turn the drive line by hand.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

Well...posi units work like brakes in a way...as you accelerate the pads in the unit apply pressure to both sides making it a full locker...if those pads are worn or broken the wheels will spin off the ground, but under load nothing will happen. So becareful with yer unit man....my dad got one for our 77 c20 and it was something like $500 for it....also it could be your rack gear as well.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

You weld the spiders to the housing and it works great but can't turn at all being
fully locked all the time without any slippage at all, will drag a tire even in the slightest turn. Works great in the front with manual hubs because you can unlock the hubs for daily driving, rear is drag strip (straight ahead) only.

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

Just leave the back brakes adjusted down less than the front, easier burnouts cause they don't hold as good.. yep done that.
