Re: 72 Suburban Build

I started a double cab project before I stumbled into the Burb. And project was an understatement. Somehow the rust tripled during shipment..... Or my vision was distorted by the fact that I found a '60 DC for sale.

Needless to say, I sold it, before completing it, to help finance the Burb build. I'll see if I can find a pic or two.

Fabbed up the last piece for the rear floor. I ran out of light so i just tacked it in. I'll finish welding it tomorrow and then tackle the carpet.

Re: 72 Suburban Build

I drove my new route to work today and it is 40 miles...one way. Needless to say the Big Block Burb isn't going to be my daily driver. Gas would kill me. So, I did what any good motor head would do. My father-in-law has had this Volvo sitting for the last 13 years with a bad motor. He said I could have it. The book came today. I'm thinking an LT or LS1 on a 700R4 or 4LXXE with some nice highway gears should put me around 22-26 MPG. Plus I would get the craziest looks when someone pulled up next to me in a rumbling Volvo.

Re: 72 Suburban Build

I haven't had much time to get on here to update anything. Work takes up most of my time now. However, you'll all be happy to know, I have been driving the heck out of the Suburban. I took this picture this morning before I went into work. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!!

Yes, that would be CVN-76 USS RONALD REAGAN which is where I'm stationed now.

Re: 72 Suburban Build

I imagine with the draft of the Reagan, and limitations of the Bay Bridge, it would be out on North Island. But I could be wrong. Been many a year, since my Navy days, and pulling into port in San Diego.

Re: 72 Suburban Build

I'd go with an LS motor for the Volvo. Should be a fun project.

Re: 72 Suburban Build

I haven't had much time to get on here in a few months. 14+ hour days leave me pretty dead by the time I get home. Luckily though I took some leave earlier this month to go visit my Suburban. My wife and son rode with me to take it to one of the local car shows in SoCal (Cruisin' Grand in Escondido). Here are a couple of pictures. There were some REALLY nice cars at the show. It felt really good to see a big crowd of people around it for most of the show. I can't wait for my ship to move back down to San Diego so I can drive it again.
