Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
Hello. I noticed some interest in my truck so I thought I would join. I have finally completed my 65 one ton 4x4 crew cab. It took me almost 3 years to complete this restoration and its now my daily driver. It is powered with a Cummins 6bt and an Allison 1000. The entire truck is Chevrolet except for the motor. My next project is a 64 Suburban with factory 4x4.

Wow Joe,
I was wondering when you were going to join. I went by your house a few times to snap some pictures of your awesome truck, but it seems that you are always out crusing and enjoying yourself with this one of a kind ride. I can't wait to see what you do with the Suburban!! Welcome to the board. Last edited by 66Gilbert; 01-29-2013 at 10:51 PM. |

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
I will be going back to the fishing trailer soon. Want to pick up GMC 4X4. What to save and what to toss? The v6 goes in lue of big block, 4 speed for auto, knees can't do two sticks. Axles,??? Or sell whole and kill a non 4x4 and balls out?

Very cool ride 65crewcab. Glad to hear its a driver. The best part about these trucks is when they are rolling down the road though they are nice to look at too.

You could just buy an auto GMC 4x4 and drive the wheels off of it. Save a lot of dough too. If you do swap the engine don't scrap it. Someone will definitely snag it up from you.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
Here are a few more pics. I need to take some more current photos. The windows are now tinted and the spray in bedliner done. The guys at Inyati had said they were going to put it on their website. The only real mod I want to do now is add some chrome running boards so my wife and kids can get in.

Wow, more impressed every time I look at it, some well thought out work. How does the diesel move the truck weight wise.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
Like everything I had to make some compromises, but overall I'm happy with the way it turned out. I hot rodded the Cummins so it moves the truck along pretty well, though a newer engine would have provided more power. I had enough trouble with matching the Allison 1000 (OD) with the Cummins and didn't want to tackle a computer controlled engine. Believe it or not I would have had to use the instrument cluster out of the donor truck among countless other parts. Besides there is no way I would put a Dodge tranny in my Chevy! With this combo it has no trouble pulling my boat and I can climb a 6% grade at 75 if I'm empty. The best part is 17mpg, especially with a heavy truck with 35's on it. I've yet to weigh it.

That is truely a well thought out and executed truck you've built
Did you use a newer frame?

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
The frame is a factory 1965 157" WB with matching VIN to the cab. The truck was a C30 cab chassis with a 10ft frame. The cab was stretched by Armbruster Stageway Co, most likely in '65, but the frame was not lengthened. I put in a late model rear Gm 14 bolt axle and took off the duals and then added the Dana 60 front. It was a lot more work but I was able to maintain the original appearance.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild
The nice thing about the truck is a lot of people in general would think it is factory, in the real world , not our's online.
