Re: Johns 66
Now lastly I never knew that there were parts that come off the fender, specifically where the rubber pieces go so before I sprayed things I took these part off....They look pretty messed up so not sure if there are replacements out there or?????
Plus I have to find the little clips that hold this stiff on...don't EVEN have a clue where to get them.

Re: Johns 66
Looks like new money!! The hood looks amazing, it all does. I know what you mean about reworking spots though. I have one spot inside my cab I can't get to lay right to save my life....tomorrow will be the 4th rework of one spot! I keep telling myself ...patience is a virtue.
maybe I will win the lottery tonight and have my truck finished....sadly, I would still finish it myself. haha I am so glad your paint guns are working like you wanted and they should! |

Re: Johns 66
Remember when I said you should try to learn something everyday? Well in todays episode of "Notashowtruck/Rustfreetruck" I think I have learned something that no one on the whole board knows.
As we know I bought some NOS Doors because mine had speaker holes and the obligatory rust issues. Well Today I found out that not only are they NOS....BUT they also came with #503 Green paint AND AND they even came with holes for camper mirrors AND AND AND AND of course my favorite....BONDO!!!!! Yes boys and girls I have the ONLY set of NOS Doors that have paint, pre-drilled for camper mirrors AND BONDO under that black epoxy primer...….. Now please don't be jealous of my doors....I know these are rare birds...LOL Its not funny but at this point I just have to laugh. My plan was to spread some filler on the passenger door jamb and while it dried I would block the NOS door and hopefully get some epoxy on it...Well as stated above they aren't NOS they are used doors. They are not in bad shape, just not NOS and definitely NOT NOS Prices. Best I can tell is that they had some surface rust and pitting and someone fixed them. Im hoping that the epoxy primer was not an attempt to be dishonest and cover up everything. Besides the camper mirror holes they weren't Fixed because of rusty holes So spent all day sanding it down to metal, POR 15d where needed, spreading filler where it needed and got it blocked down......I was able to also get the passenger side door jamb to my liking. So it looks like I will do the same to the drivers door...at this point whats one more piece? Then ALL I have left is the front grille support. Its still mounted on the truck but I have sanded what I could ...Mostly the bottom edge is whats left. I do have a lead on an NOS tailgate from a member on the board and I trust that he wouldn't sell me a used tailgate as NOS.... So enjoy the pics....One thing is for sure...ONCE I do get it all sanded down to metal I will definitely know what is in my truck. Life is not what happens to you...its how you react!!!!

Re: Johns 66
Did a little today on ole girl...Got the grille support out and sanded down...NO BONDO YAY!!!!!!
I tried some aircraft stripper I bought from KBS......waste of 45.00 wouldn't take off Rustolem paint but it will make bondo bubble...So back to the die grinder and scotch brite pads....I got it all cleaned up and shot some POR 15 on the backside...hopefully to rust no more....ever. I then took out the back glass and windshield....This could be the only pllce left that I could be surprised....I am very happy to report besides a little bit of surface rust, both flanges looked great....Will get them cleaned up this week and get some POR 15 on them as well. Undercoating wasn't too bad...glad I took Scotts suggestion and scraped it first....a lot came off with just a razor blade.

Re: Johns 66
Did a lil piddlin today...as you can see she is backed in.....and you can see my wonderful helper today...My sisters grandson..Kayden….or my Great Nephew...yep....he Loves Trucks.
Anyways got her backed into the garage...where she is gonna be for awhile. After getting everything sanded down to metal and still not really knowing about the drivetrain not running right, and after replacing the torque convertor 3 times I have decided to completely tear her down, take the motor back to the shop that built it...Randy is gonna go back through the tranny just to make sure( I don't think its the tranny, I think the cam is out of time) Im not gonna take the cab off the frame but gonna take the drivetrain, wiring, interior etc...out. Gonna get the firewall, inner fenders, and radiator support stripped and painted, get the interior sanded down and primed and ready for color. My hopes are that by the time I get the motor back that I will have the interior painted and wiring started....Just kinda disheartening that the motor has to come back out...but he is either gonna make it run right or give me my money back. Will get the glass flanges cleaned up and POR 15 in the next day or so......Then get the firewall, inner fenders, and core support primed and painted. I did find a rusted out spot on the core support that I am gonna try and fix...Inner fenders and firewall wont be bad to strip since all its got on it is some rattle can paint.....the ole oven cleaner trick will do wonders...…...

Re: Johns 66
Lil more epoxy primer and a lil more sanding....I will say the interior is way easier to sand than the outside since it only has one layer of paint..I did find some pitting on the top of the dash near the drivers side and some surface rust on the inside of the windshield flange.....not real sure why or how it got there but some POR 15 will take care of it for sure.
Also learned today that it is a must to remove the steering column cluster out. I also took out the radio and the under dash center speaker....both look to be originals...I will get some pics of them next time Im at the shop.

Re: Johns 66
Thanks Andy.....I think taking it all down to the metal has helped the look of the primer...my hopes are that they finished product will be better because of it, Gonna start on the cab and get it in primer...I did about half the inside today...mainly piddling around but will get the seat and tank out tomorrow and be able to go full bore on it. besides the small place on the top of the dash and the gunrack holes I don't think I will need much filler....then I get to try my hand at spraying the inside.

Re: Johns 66
Lil More done today.....
Got the seat out and taken apart. Not sure if this was standard or not but there was carpet under all the padding etc...only on the drivers side. I was able to get the seat covers off in one piece.....a member on here wanted them...he is gonna use them for patterns. Found some metal tags on the back of the seat, Im guessing they are fabric tags but not sure...they were wrapped around the springs.... Sanded the interior and put filler where needed on the gunrack places. I also took out the fresh air vent and cleaned out everything....its amazing at what stuff was in there and how long it could have been there. Ill get the gas tank out this weekend when I have some help since it has some fuel in it.

Re: Johns 66
My guess is the carpet was put there to keep the springs from punching through the foam. I just might have to try that on mine to see if it works
On the radio, there are some companies that rebuild your original with all new internals to have a modern system with that original look. That's what I would do if I had an original radio, but I don't think Frankentruck came equipped with a radio, and the PO hacked my dash a little

Re: Johns 66
I think the tags are cool...
I would do as Christian said...I would get the radio rebuilt to modern conversion...to have the old school look with modern technology. That is what I am planning on doing one day. |
