Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I'm buying a '99 Sonoma from my friend. I've already been driving it since the beginning of this year. He's got my '95 Suburban to fix a bad head gasket, so he let me drive the Sonoma. We traded work and he has a fulltime job and a busy life. I'm not concerned since I have something to drive, although many times I really needed the Suburban. We made this deal because I didn't want to pull the heads outside in Jan. It's about done now and I want to keep the Sonoma for a light duty truck that gets good gas mileage.

Now that we confirmed I'm keeping it, I want to go ahead with things I'd like to do to it. First thing is get a fiberglass cap, and I really want one w/o windows. Yesterday I stopped by a place that sells that kind of thing and found out Leer still offers them for the S10/Sonomas. That's nice, so I was going to order one until I found out the price, $2,600!! That really shocked me. I need to find a used one. I had no idea the cost went up that much

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Look around for a few weeks on marketplace and you'll find a good one for less than $500. I think I paid around $450 for the cap on my 2005. White is the easiest color to find of course.

Ok, I also want a truck like yours
I am looking there for sure. The truck is black and I'll paint the cap. I have it in my head I only want a windowless one. I want that commercial vibe while also more like a custom mini-truck look. I plan to lower it a bit and put the factory 5-spoke 96-00 Extreme 16" on it.

I stopped in to that business because they had a used black one on their rack. But it wasn't for the Sonoma/S10s. I just can't believe how much they've gone up. I bought a new Platinum '99 ZR2 and put a new matching Leer cap with all the options on it. That one cost $800. I know it's been 24 years, so I expected maybe double by now. But 225% increase I did not expect. He's selling me the truck for $1,000. I'd have to be crazy, or anyone else, to pay what the truck is worth just for a cap.

This is the look I'm going after. This one belonged to the same friend. I was working on my Suburban at his shop and he let me drive it home, so I had it a couple weeks. I really wanted this one, but when he decided to sell it was when he drove it to Carlisle. It wasn't for sale but someone asked and he let it go

This is the one I'm buying. Both are 4cyl/5spd

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

My son came home for a couple days. My wife did his laundry and washed his Subaru's key fob. So the car would not start, no key. I blew some air in it and got the car started. Moved it in front of the garage and changed his oil. I guess I'm cheaper then the oil change places. Try to start the car again and no go. This push button stuff is a pain in the a$$. I took it apart and dried it out and it works again.

That's a nice looking S10. I bought a '99 new off the lot and put a lot of miles on it over the course of 3 years as I was driving for work a lot then. Used to see them everywhere here in MI but never see them now. Road salt is a killer in these parts.

We have rust, but not like Michigan. I see these all over the place. I see them every day. This one has no rust, 230 thousand something miles. The clutch is about gone, so that's first on the agenda. I may just skip the cap and do a tonneau to protect tools. I'll have my Suburban back soon and that's my 2-seater tool bin/towing/hauling rig. The Sonoma will be for shuttling to my jobs once set up and for going up to see my mom more often. It costs over $100 just to go see her in the Suburban, about a 2 1/2hr drive. I've been wanting a 4-banger light craft to accompany the Suburban for a smart combo. I've been an 8-lugger guy as long as I can remember, like since gas was $.50 a gallon

I drive past a white early S10 longbed that is still clean I'd love to buy on my way from this place I do a lot of work on. It's 2wd, probably 4-cyl. I'd really like to find a longbed 4wd in either style. Can't beat the price on this one, though. I just have to do some work on my friend's place. Heck, I've already had 8 months use out of it without owning it. Talk about easy terms!

Looks like you "worked" your way into a nice one there.
And it is capable of pulling a light trailer when the need arises if needed.

Yeah. Just to be clear it's the black one. I want to do what was done to his raspberry one, wheels and stance. He also did some things to pep it up, simple things. No hitch on either and I have been missing that. I guess I can get one that mounts behind the tag. I wouldn't want one below the roll pan

Similarly, I've always had an 8 lugger for weekends and a "mileage" and/or "airport" car for racking up the mileage. I drive and fly a lot for work. No way I could waste the amount of fuel, risk the door dings, and watch a nice vehicle rust, so most of my miles are in a 4 cylinder vehicle. Currently driving my wife's old 2012 equinox with 215K on it. Prior to that was a 2006 HHR I bought new that I had to retire due to rust with 315K on it.

I don't feel bad putting miles on cars like this because they are fuel efficient. They are also less exhausting to drive, at least for me.

Yeah, for my work an 8-lug was required and buying a second economic vehicle, which would also need to be a truck, wasn't cost effective. At least I didn't think it would be, with cost of vehicle, insurance, upkeep vs better gas mileage. Then there could be days I ended up needing the bigger truck unexpectedly. I'd drive along toying with the thought, ever since S10/S15s came out, or a painted to match with utility bed with matching wheels mini work truck. When I was married there was always what my wife drove to travel in. But, I was so used to accepting the cost of gas in a larger V8 truck that we went from an '87 Suzuki Samurai to a '90 Blazer. I remember the first time running up to visit my folks commenting to my wife how much nicer it was for the four of us all to have our own space. My son and daughter weren't bickering about who's feet were in the other's space

This week and today I put up (3) carports behind the barn for my muscle cars. They keep my 68 C10 company. Now my wife has a place to park out front LOL.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

The Stihl ms460 gave me problems today it ran great for about a half hour then starting acting like it wasn’t getting gas . Filled it and it ran great then did it again so I hade to investigate . Found the problem gas line was mushy and the filter came off . So the line was floating on the gas . And of course nobody had it in stock so I had to order it .

Glad I have a few others to work with

It hasn’t had E fuel in it ever . I think it’s just age since it was just where it was stretched over the filter .

I have a '67 I've been working on for about 5 years. Only part left from the doors back of the original car is the trunk lid and I should have bought a better used one of those too, after having it chemically stripped and discovering the truth.

SLOWLY working on final bodywork and, eventually, paint.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I tried for 2 years to get a contractor to re-face my shop building, after I removed the sliding doors and installed an overhead. No one wanted to do this or didn't know how and charged me $1,200 to mess it up. So, I spent 4 weeks learning how to do it myself. The only part I wasn't comfortable with was extending the gable end for an overhang. I don't like flat gable ends. The sliders were beat up and hard to open/close when we bought the place 4 years ago.

Building was a shell and I needed to heat it and the sliders don't seal well, so I modified the trusses for a 12' sectional in a 12' sidewall building.

Removing the sliders.
