Post Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Actually ;

I opened them up to .065" before it'd go further than 150 miles before fouling several at one time , this after I'd up graded to '77 HEI system .

The valve guides are looser than madonna's knees ~ it uses oil (but doesn't smoke much) at a prodigious rate , I'm sure opec will be sending me Christmas Cards this year .

I really need to get the rebuilt head on it but I'm still chasing parts...

I was wondering, too.

The sun came out today, so I finished up the head/parking light switch and the "dummy" choke button set up. Replaced the hand-brake and the hand brake cover.

Put the steering wheel on loosely for a "final" test fit. You might notice the little button on the dash next to the ashtray. I got sick of screwing around with the horn.
And, the hole was already there...Some P.O. got drill-happy, I guess. Now, it's a teeny horn button.

Oops! Can't see it in these pics....

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Nice wheel mag, really nice and VW I see now with the guides that worn out but may be defeating yourself with a gap that wide, may not jump the gap as easily and foul the plugs especially without an ignition upgrade, maybe drop the gap to .055 or even .050 and try that may help. I have used the .065 gap like Olds or Buicks did back in the day of first HEI's and found it was a bit wide and dropped it back and the plugs cleared up, worth a shot anyway or as i have done before miled engines just switched up to a platinium tip plug with the small pos. electrode and it doesn't foul nearly as easily, I use the same for running an engine a bit fat on stuff we 1/4 mile.

I traded my 71 GMC 2wd for an 85 Chevy K20... Sorry guys! I've really enjoyed this board and the 71 drove like a dream but I really wanted a 4x4 and this was too good of a trade to pass on. Maybe I'll be back someday.

Should make driving it more fun. It gives you a reason to clean things up on the underside of the truck too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Well, I finally got the under side of the cab finished today.
We did alot of welding to the cab floors while it was still on the chassis, then I put it on the rotissary to finish up the bottom. Got all the pcs welded in on the bottom, seam sealed every joint and seam underneath, two coats of por 15. Now its time to lower it back down and seal/coat the floors top side. Not too far from getting the cab in epoxy primer like the front clip and bed.

Very soon it will be time to play mechanic instead of bodyman. On to the frame!!

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I drove it, again. My lady friend and I took rode some back roads and did some hiking to enjoy the fall colors. Happy my truck is in a place where it runs & drives like new, and doesn't need anything.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Just climbed out from underneath. Adjusted the hand-brake and put a new
do-whackie three-sided fork thing on the trans shifting linkage (TH350).
There was some slop in the shifter. And I had that nice new chunk of linkage in my stash.

Now there's no slop in the shifter. Of course, I forgot that I adjusted the column WITH the slop. Which means that now
I have to adjust it, or the linkage up top, to get the pointer just perfect.

Yeah. That's for another day.

Nice photo.

Took your lady friend on the back roads hiking and enjoying fall colors, eh? Sounds like a Cinemax soft porn plot... Hopefully you made the most of it! Lol

I attempted to get my lights working, that suddenly decided to go south with my stereo. Got my dash, running and dome light back. Radio too. Still no brake lights though.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Started cleaning up the 406. Has a blown head gasket right now. Putting this in my truck this winter. Going to change some things, different valve covers, electric water pump, and harmonic balancer. Has over 400HP.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Pulled the stock non-tilt steering column out of the truck (it actually came out in 2 pieces...the bearing were completely shot). Everytime I work on this truck and replace parts, I find it more and more amazing that I survived the drive home from Tennessee considering the pieced together manner its in currently. I'll be putting in a rebuilt tilt column hopefully tomorrow...come on UPS!!!

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
