Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

Let's not be mixing our apples with our oranges in this discussion. In a performance environment, there is a HUGE functional difference between a floor shift for a manual and a floor shift for an automatic.

To put it another way, moving your automatic from the column to the floor isn't going to make anywhere near the difference that moving your manual from the column to the floor will.

anything other than a Lokar in the floor on an automatic is Joe Dirt.

Sure, they may not look the best. But I know when I'm bangin through the gears with my man. valve bodied TH400 tranny behind my big block I could care less. Plus the reverse lock out is a necessity when I'm on the street or strip. So in my opinion, it all depends on what YOU want YOUR truck to do for YOU. It's all up to you!

Edit: I'll take my "joe dirt" shifter any day. Functionality > Show Queen.

To b&m or not to b&m that is the question
When I do 6000 RPM dually chirping manual overide shift with my TCI Super Street Fighter Turbo 350....I better have a ratchet shifter or things could go boom.

If you have a stock trans or one that does not a have full auto/manual valve body I guess it doesn't matter....because when you try to manually shift a regular valve body auto there's always "governor delay"...sometimes regardless of a "shift kit".

That's why full manual shift auto's or manual/auto valve body trans, the stock shifter is simply is to dangerous in manual mode.....to easy to shoot right past neutral and go into the reverse detent.

I guess it's a tradeoff ....I like the stock look ...but I also love to "bark the dually's" in manual shift mode....sometimes I'll just drive it around in "D" for convenience and other times I'll shift it like a manual trans both up and down that's whats fun about a true performance auto.....be prepared to shell out $1500.00 for a 3 speed and well over $2000.00 for a overdrive. IMO

I always post something then go back and find that my point has already been made......

I like you enjoy going fast, and manual shifting a performance valve body trans is the fastest from A to B period.......So take your Lokar's and tree shifters and pray you dont hit reverse when your trying to find that next detent at full throttle. A true hot rod better perform first and look good second. I learned the hard way and exploded a "basic rebuild" trans.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I've been debating this and would prefer to add one in a console if adding to the floor...which if I go buckets I'll do for sure. With my motor and trans combo and plans to race it...I'm wanting a bit more control then a column shifter gives.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

Even if the Lokar has the reverse lock-out, the ratchet style shifters still gives you ultimate controllability of your transmission. I had a Lokar style shifter in before my B&M and the B&M gives superior feel and control from my experience with them both. If you're going for the beauty queen show truck sure it doesn't make sense, but when my big block is turning 6,500 rpm going 100mph plus, I want that extra sense of control.

So what!!! It is still a "detent shifter" not a "ratchet" performance shifter......might work great on a show and shine ride which sees "occasional" strip use trans ......not on mine

--Alto kevlar red eagle clutch pack (2 added kolene treated steels and friction discs)

--True manual mode with a auto option

--heat treated 2nd gear sprag (weakest link in turbo 350-400)

--no governor overide ....when shifting manual

--8620 steel input shaft

--large diameter servos

--constant line pressure

...............serious street strip rides would never shift with a show and shine shifter........go to a drag race and count the number of lokars you see vs. full ratchet shifters......not many....because their not made for that purpose
Don't get me wrong there a beautiful piece of work but when your in a race against a full on ratchet and all else being equal it's a loser every-time.

A bit of advise next time you write a post be respectful and leave out the "LOL" .....and I will certainly do the same .....that is how "pissing matches get started"

I concede the the point about the Lokar .....your right ..it does have a lockout and by "hot rodders" I should have said "street strip". Because there is some badass hotrods out there running Lokars and tree shifters for that matter...there just at a disadvantage at the strip...thats all......................

.............................So lets stick a fork in this 1 because everyone has made their point and bottom line "all shifters have advantages and disadvantages".............................Rushnbobo

slowly read the above (first post of this thread) ...do you see the word RACE mentioned anywhere in it?

a bit of advice ... either find a sense of humor (the reason for the smilie in the first place) or don't derail a thread into something it's not and then the rest of us won't have a reason to disrespect you & end up laughing at you ... especially over something as juvenile as being all butt-hurt because someone doesn't agree with your shifter choice.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I like it, but my truck is purpose built, and I race and show it. I run a B&M Star shifter and I like it. It has full ratchet, or detent, and is very easy to use with one hand. I think in more of a stock type truck, the column shifter looks better.

I'm thinking about doing a pistol grip Hurst Quarter Stick in My son's street strip truck. I want to do some kind of a cool mount for it.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

IM gonna install a Automatic floor shifter, but im going with Lokar, I think Lokar gives it a more of an old school feel. The other one seems to give it more of a Muscle car look, not my favorite but i agree with some of you up there, its your truck do what you like and screw what others think

Not hard to fix I've torn out those eye soars many times and gone back to column shift also those shifter installs always lead to aftermarket bucket seats. What's the deal with that? At least the tailgate is narrow enough at the top that it isn't as easy to install one of those riceburner WINGS. Well that's my opinion. Later Paul

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

Depends on how you set it up but i think that the floor shifter in a rod truck is pretty cool. if you have a DD or just a show truck. dont do it. make it look nice and throw it on the column. i have also seen push button shifters. custom made. i dont think they are open to the general public as of this time.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I don't think I would want it in my daily driver truck but it sure wouldn't be a deal killer if the rest of the truck really spun my wheels. The floorboard patch would be pretty simple and easy to do and it should be easy enough to swap back to column linkage if you want to. And the shifter is always something that you can sell or trade when you pull it out.

The bad part, if the truck now has nice carpet would be the hole left in the carpet but there are ways to fix that.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

If I was to add a floor shifter it be a 85-86 pontiac 2+2 console and shifter
or an old cutlass"S" 76-77 set up..
I have a b/m megashifter and they are great in street/strip cars..
but out of place in a truck that isn't a strip warror

right now, mine is colum, and loose as a goose, and in need of the bushing that goes in the arm off the colum that the likage does to..
if I go buckets,, it's gone
