I was thinking into getting one of the tire boots like they use for parking tickets

im surprised, i didn't see anyone mention the club that goes around the brake and/or the clutch pedals. they take 45 minutes to cut through without a torch and they arent easy to reach. a thief would have to stake your ride out and come prepared for that one. there's also an electric solenoid operated check valve that can be installed in your brake lines.

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

IMO the best thing you can do is keep it insured. As said before if they want it bad enough they will get it. I just had my daily driver 98 GMC stolen and only had liability insurance. It was found with no front clip, interior, bed or transmission. That left me with a pile of scrap metal. I have stated value on my stuff now and if it comes up missing I'll get a nice check and build a better one. I have a couple of the normal things on my truck to prevent theft but I'm pretty sure the only way my truck is getting stolen is by a wrecker or flatbed.

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

I haven't put it in this truck yet but had it in my pace car. you have to have a grant steering wheel to use this. You insert a key and turn a knob and take the steering wheel off and install a plate in its place they would have to tow it if they want it. Not sure if it is even still available but it was $100 at the time for the adaptor. I just checked out their site they still offer it but suggested retail is $193. Kinda a hassle but the pace car not got stolen and i lived in some crappy apartments at the time.

DOG! I had a pitbull that I used to let sleep in my blazer. Oooh what a surprise when people peak into tinted windows. His house was in between my truck and blazer. Great investment and a hell of a friend!

I just lock mine up at night. It's risky, but if they want it bad enough they're going to get it.

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

Great post! I live in an area where everything I own has to be locked up or it will dissappear. Friggin crackheads will steal anything they can pawn off! Anyway my dad lives with me and isnt much of a guardian so I have been thinking of ways to secure my ride in case of theft attempts. I would like to run some kind of cable through the inside of the hood and then wrap it aroun the frame or bumper mounts and padlock it so my engine will be safe. I owned a trans am that some jealous Mofo decided to put sugar in its gas tank and not long after I got this truck someone (obviously an enthusiast of these trux like us) stole my entire rear left tail light setup including the bulbs and metal housing (only 2 screws to take off kindof an easy grab and go). Once I get my new door locks installed things will be a little less easy to access. Its sad people are that desperate to steal from you. I always wondered if that old trick about hooking a live wire to your frame works? So that the thief gets a jolt when they touch the car like a faulty refrigerator? lol

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

For anyone who parks it at home outside, I know a guy who lives on a hill so someone could just roll the car down it and work on it at the bottom. He came up with the idea of chaining his car to the ground. He drilled a hole in the cement and put two pieces of rebar going perpendicular to each other then cemented them in with the chain on them. You have to get the forged chain because the only thing they could cut it with is a torch. It seems to work pretty good, just dont forget to take it off when you drive away

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

Here's my "security device"

My truck was an auto before the PO merged it (body) with 4x4 frame and made into a manual tranny truck. But he left the "starter disconnect if not in park" connected. So when I park my truck in my driveway at night, I just slightly move the old auto sleve on the steering colum. You can't start the truck unless it's in park. Instant security device.

I asked both my brother and Dad to see if they could start the truck and they didn't have a clue how to make it run. But as said before, my truck isn't the prettiest girl on the block, so no one really messes with her.

I'd like to install a switch somewhere under dash that would disconnect power to distributor, or something like that. But as others said, if a thief wants it, they are going to get it one way or another. Crossing my fingers...

At home- Big dog out front, Hidden kill switch that you need a key to activate in cab, & another kill hidden under the hood.

A buddy of mine takes his coil wire off and carries it in his pocket when he goes places.

Usually I don't lock it when I park at a restaraunt. I'd rather they didn't break my window to steal my ZZ Top 8-tracks.

If they want to take it bad enough to try it, they will get it.

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

Small dogs(I have 7).They'll bark at an imagined noise, much less a thief. After that Mr.12 ga. is on the job.The first is rock salt then bird.I figure the rock salt won't hurt the truck as much as it being stolen(even for a joy ride). But it should start the thief moving enough to hit em with the bird shot.
I also live in a much nicer nieghborhood than I used to with 2 stay-at-home women,a night shift cop, and only one exit to the cul-de-sac.Needless to say I don't have much trouble with prowlers at all.

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

Keep it ugly looking

Or

Keep it 3 on the tree..............90% of the population under 30, which is the majority of the crooks, are too stupid to drive such a thing

We always kept ours unlocked with the keys in them.............Heck, if someone wants a farm truck with a dash full of seed corn slips, fuel receipts, clipboard, calculator.........Bench seat with full of Jap(AKA Junk Tools), Barnes Dehorner with bits of fur/blood, and floor boards full of cow s*** they can have the truck. About the only GOOD thing in there that someone may have wanted was a .410 pump we had, but even that was a cheapo.

Vehicle Theft???? Naw, not here.............If your gonna steal something take something nice right

Re: ungaraged trucks - what do you do to detour theft..............?

I have mine parked in the fenced back yard right behind my garage, then I parked my old Ford F150 that I use to haul trash behind it.....surrounded on 3 sides.

Oh and just in case they feel that one exposed side is worth a shot they get to deal with him.....

Trust me, nobody wants to deal with him in his backyard.
