Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Doubleclucker I am in the process of rebuilding my 1995 chevy nv4500 for my 1970 blazer I would like not to have to buy a AA bell housing if I don't have to. I have a 60's gm bell housing and dropped it on the and can't see how the bolts won't go in to the transmission case. Could you tell me the bolt pattern on you bell hosing to see if it is the same as mine.
Thank you for taking the time to do a nice write up. |

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
DemkoG- The front bolt pattern on the transmission is the same for most all Muncie/saginaw's but the front bearing retainer is 5 1/8" only on the standard duty (CH)SM465 68'-91' and 92'-95' NV4500. If you look at the pics earlier on ;the top bolt holes are the ones that just make it on both sides if the bell is placed perfectly straight up.
And I thank you for the compliment of my thread.

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Well I thought it was time for an update as its been well over a year even 2.
About 2 months after the doubler install I kept hearing strange noises from the gearboxes and they got worse over about a month so I decided to investigate. Seems the countershaft roller bearings went bad in the np203 box and even turned the shaft past the outside locking tab which was never really tight to it in the the first place (the factory ford one)so I made a new one tighter and stronger when rebuilt.Inside the box there was no damage anywhere else just the pieces of broken rollers in the bottom of the case!Just to be on the safe side though I had other range box internals so I cleaned and swapped all the parts inside. The gaskets would be too slow to get so I opted to buy a roll of gasket material and make my own which turned out even better I used empty 38 special casings to cut perfect bolt holes in the gaskets. Then I made an adapter to bolt the gearboxes right to the transmission jack for a safer install.I also made a bit different nv4500 shifter for clearence (i will see if I can find a pic) Since then- No issues at all, quiet as a church mouse, The overdrive is awesome. On the bush trails tight turning and maneuvering are made more easier and controlled with the doubler and low gears (your not always on the clutch pedal) In the end... I am very happy with this setup and the cost was very affordable.

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Just figured I use same thread for everything about ol' black if this is wrong or not allowed let me know thanks.
Well I finally got my Bluetooth aldl so I can use my phone with aldldroid and I can say I really like it. The rdr bluetooth comes with a 10k resistor across pins A&B which is not needed for my 1227747 truck application and the inventer would not answer or call back to tell how to switch it off inside the box so I simply just pulled pin B out of my aldl connector and it works great. This is perfect for datalogging ,watching sensors also for chip tuning.

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Well figure its time for update-
last year I lost #8 cylinder and decided to retire the old 350. I found a low mileage 95' tbi to swap; basically a bolt in since I had converted the old motor to tbi/serpentine already.Just a flywheel from 1 piece motor needed. One issue I am going to address is the cheezy distributor that comes with tbi. more pics to come...

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Ironically this just came in the mail.
It was used in a few GM's in the early 80's up till 87'. Now waiting for a plug for this module to change on my wiring harness.

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
great build!!
Just wondering if you got your belly plate with the bends already in it or did you put them in yourself? I want to plate the belly of my burb and since the 205 is still in the factory position Ill need multiple bends similar to the factory skid plate |

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
A few pics ;The job went smooth and no problems.
You can see(sorry blurry) the build up of carbon tracking from the small contacts in the cap as well as the small hold down screws that are easily broke off with even a hint of corrosion present. The 2 connectors on my harness that were changed to fit the big cap was all that was needed for this distributor to work everything fits. Will see how it performs as time passes and keep posted' strangely enough it seems to idle better from the get go? later...

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Well it was time for ol' black to shed the rusty old steel wheels and almost obsolete 16.5 tires.
I found these for sale locally and after reading and watching vid from a member on here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6dlwm5IUcw( thank you very much). I am waiting for lug nuts from feebay lugnutking 32 LUG NUTS DUAL EXTERNAL THREAD 9/16-18 8 LUG NUTS CHEVY, GMC 1971-1988 should be in soon and let you know how the install goes. 315/70/17 BFG all-terrain KO stock hummer H2 tires & rims

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Great thread.
I I've been collecting parts to do about the same for my `72. I have a `96 4500, Duffy planetary box, and round pattern 205. I parted a suburban I got from a prepper to get the 205, iron tailhousing, AA bellhousing, the TC, driveshafts, pedal setup, hydraulic clutch bits, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, crossmember, etc. The best part--I sold the rest for $700 more than I paid. The worst--the flywheel is counterweighted, which says the engine had a 400 crank. I'm a moron. I swapped the long 32 spline input on the 205 for a new shot one for the cost of shipping with a pirate person. I also flipped a broken 4500 for $300 parts money in a few day for grins. I paid 600 for the trans, and 600 for the box and got 1000 for the part out and trans flip. Anyway, I have the bits to convert less the cut/lengthened driveshafts money for a hundred. Now I need a trans jack and ambition. After that I'll nuke an axle and have to go to tons. To the OP, I'd be interested in lots of pics and/or talk about the PTO winches and setup. I have a 12k Ramsey in the garage I don't know what to do with... |

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Frankon- It seems you like to wheel and deal parts like myself.
A 400 small block we built years ago for a buddy; we used a pioneer counter weight you simply bolted under the manual trans flywheel sourced from any of the other 9 small blocks from the 2 piece era... He drove that truck for a least 15 years after until he sold it. http://www.northernautoparts.com/part/pp-fbp2 The trans jack I use is the cheap add on you use on your floor jack.A piece of 2x2 square tubing bolted to the jack plate with the trans mount center bolt pattern in it then bolt it directly to the t/c mount. As you see in my thread my PTO is a dana/chealsea duel shaft on my 205 and runs at 90% of input speed. I use my nv4500 and 203 high/low for 10 power in speeds and 2 power out running one winch at a time ;If you look close I installed loops on each winch driveshaft for safety.I am able to winch and drive at the same time. I just made a video of something me and the young lad put together for another use for the rear winch (other than pulling vehicles on the trailer behind). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMeN5...ature=youtu.be or

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
i have the same transmission adapter i used it the other day to reinstall my rear bumper and i was really hard to turn the treaded knob to ajust the angle of the adapter. is your the same, as a tranny is more heavier than a simple bumper?yes i lubbed the treaded rod

Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
yeah and i still am going too. but like everything i plan, nothing goes acordingly, a VERY nice cucv almost came knocking at my door begging for a place to stay... counld pass up the deal and got very tired of working outside so i built a big 2 doors garage. now the 4500 is going into the cucv and i have other plans for the wrecker witch the 4500 was going into. one other thing that stopped me dead in my tracks is that i learned the hard way the difference between a pick up and a cab n chassis . the wrecker bed i bought doesnt fit on a pick up frame. so i got discouraged and took a break on that project. as of right now im trying to install a 15 000lbs hitch on the cucv and for those who know what im talking about its not a bolt on deal
