Carby is always the _last_ thing you should touch when chasing running issues, tune ups etc.

I was going to rebuild the carb after it is running good . I noticed the other day that one of the gaskets looked like it had gas on it .
I did the initial tuning like you said ran better but still not running good . I now I have to do the one mark at a time thing like you suggested

Thumbs up Tune Up

It's the little things that make the most difference .

Don't sweat fuel stains around the bowl gasket, that's normal .

First :

Remove and check the spark plugs , you personally have to gap them properly using a WIRE GAUGE to .035" .

Use a test light on each and every plug wire to see if they're continuous ~ if the test light doesn't light, replace that wire .

Points to no more than .016" or 33° dwell if you can find/borrow (Pawn shops, $10) a Dwell/Tach meter ~ setting the dwell with the plugs removed and rotor off whilst cranking the engine guarantees best dwell and hottest spark .

Look across the ends of the plugs ~ the center electrode _MUST_ be squared off ! if it's even slightly rounded the engine will never run properly .

This stuff is easy to do and teaches you as you do it .

Ok plugs done dwell good wires good set at 12 btdc . Runs better getting a misfire once in a while .would it be worth at this point to go hei ?

I have a 66 with oil bath air cleaner and the truck had been sitting for probably 20 years. It would quite frequently spit just when starting under load and take a while to clear itself. With carb kit there was no difference but with HEI from a 78 Nova the problem went away completely. It must have had a weak coil or bad plug wire.

Yes, a thousand times yes .

My '69 C/10's 250 i6 engine is in bad shape ~ it runs fine but fouls the spark plugs every 250 miles or so, adding the HEI setup from a '76/'77 Chevy Nova makes it run perfectly all the time .

With HEI you open the spark plug gaps up to .060 and they'll fire no matter how much oil is getting past the rings or valve guides .

Even the basic Pertronix " Ignitor" points replacement system will give you a noticeable boost in power , smoother idle , easier starting and improved fuel economy .
