Re: single stage paint pics
Bringing this back out. Thinking of doing a SS home paint job in red. Doesn’t look like getting a “Show shine” is for clears only. 😁

For cutting I used 1000 wet for most of it followed by 1500 and 2000 wet, although in some areas I was able to do just the 2000. When I get the truck out of storage this month I plan on buffing it with some 3M products. I still have a few swirls left from the System One compound I used last Fall. Before I painted anything I read that "buffers win car shows not painters", I have learned this to be so very true. Every see the RIDES episode showing Foose's Riddler winner that custom cabriolet 40s looking car? The show said there was a husband and wife team that did nothing but buff car parts for months to get all the finishes just right. |

Re: single stage paint pics
PPG single stage top and bottom colors. The green is metallic. The white is solid.

Man.........after looking at all of these single stage paint jobs, I'm definitely painting my truck with it once it's ready to be painted years from now.

Re: single stage paint pics
I've painted my share of cars back over the years. Dad and I had a body shop until about 90. We were spraying mostly acrylic lacquer. I didn't care for the cut and buff part of it. I enjoyed painting with catalyzed enamel. I loved laying down that last coat and watching it flow out. That paint was hard as nails when it cured and held up well. My favorite one was a 67 Nova we built for a friend. It was a catalyzed enamel Cadillac yellow. It laid down real smooth. That was early 80's and he still has that car today. We got out of the business before the bc/cc method came along. I've been told more than once that clear coat can make a so so painter look real good depending on just how much cut and buff one wanted to do. And seeing all these 90 and up factory 2 stage paint jobs failing I don't think I want that. I plan to use single stage non metallic on my 69 when the time comes.

Re: single stage paint pics
Boog brings up a good point. SS works for solid colors, but not metallic colors. I painted this medium olive K10 SWB in about 1986-87 with lacquer and no clear. Metallic colors won't hold up unprotected. They fade quickly.

Re: single stage paint pics
BTW, I only bought that K10 SWB because it had a ton of options. I robbed the options, for a project I was working on, painted it and flipped it as soon as possible. Man, if I could only do that one over.

Re: single stage paint pics
Re metallics and SS:
I used to own a k1500 with mostly original paint. It was dark olive poly and had a gold sparkle in the paint. Photos can’t capture it - in person it was really cool. I’m sure it was SS - wouldn’t this color be a “metallic” type?

Re: single stage paint pics
Another single stage job, '67 Camaro (Ermine White). As others have noted, single stage for solid colors, you'd be hard pressed to know it wasn't base/clear.

My dad had a 71 C10 that was dark Olive. His paint held up well, but he never parked it outside. Oh, BTW his is another SS paint job. Even if it does fly in the face of what I said about metallic not holding up well.

Re: single stage paint pics
Another of my dad's trucks. Dark Bronze (metallic) with non original cream, both in SS paint. It would seem I am trying to prove myself wrong about my metallic statement.

Re: single stage paint pics
Here’s my k1500 dark olive poly before and after polish of the original paint.
Can’t do this with b/c paint jobs... Quote:

Re: single stage paint pics
Your right Pete, as long as there is paint, there is a shine in there somewhere.

Re: single stage paint pics
I have been tossing around painting my truck that vermilion poly. Would that be a metallic? I have painted just one truck but never metallic. Your trucks all look awesome. I would be super happy if mine come out half that nice.
