Re: 1969 chevy cst10 build

mcbassin,i was looking at your project thread and was wondering if you move the crossmember where the rear shocks are located?
since im doing the change from leaf springs to coil springs i found that crossmember where the shocks attach to,but the crossmember its bigger and it wont fit in between the frame,i guess i can cut it and make it fit,but if it came from another chevy same year why its bigger....

Re: 1969 chevy cst10 build

That was fast, nice job on parts collecting! I thought you were putting it off until after the engine? At this point you have some things you need to be thinking about.

1) Where is the position of shock and spring cross member is located. Hint, the center of the cross member should be indexed on the center of the oblong reference hole on the side of the rail where your upper shock mounts are currently located.

2) You can use your existing front trailing arm mount cross member if you remove the mounting bracket form the donor and bolt them up to your current cross member.

3)The wheels on fleetside trucks are are about 1.5" forward of being centered in the fender and the lower you go the more obvious it becomes. You could take this opportunity to move the trailing arm mounting cross member back 1.5" and corrrect this issue now. With a 5.3 and a 4l60e trans you will more than likely need a custom driveline any way so you may think about doing this.

4) Flipping the cross member mounting bracket on the front of the trailing arm helps increase traction and something you may want to do. do some research.

Also, ECE sells the axle saddle kit for these truck for a good price and way2lo2 sells u-bolt and lowering block kits in the suspension marketplace for a real good price.

Frame specs for lwb and swb trucks for you to reference when you install your cross members.

What are you doing for a panhard rod?

I figured that i would be expending more $$ on body/parts and now that i have some left over from tax! , i think i would work on the frame/suspension and body work..

Ok,ill check on that..i still gotta clean and por-15 everything..

i just remove the rivets from the old crossmember, they were easy to remove!..

how can i move the trailing arm mounting back,if they go where the holes are already..?

Re: 1969 chevy cst10 build

Sorry I missed the question above. I have been off all week prepping mine for paint. Haven't been on here much. Hopefully 69gmc10 got you fixed up on the frame. I didn't have to move my rear shock crossmember but I did replace it since it was cracked on both sides.

The cab looks pretty dang solid! You should be able to find that patch on eBay. I know porterbuilt makes a really nice three piece set for shaving the firewall. Keep up the good work.

What color you going with???
I havent got time to work on the frame since i always work out of town, and when i get home its dark already and people around here not like noise at night lol...
im gonna start cleaning and painting the crossmember and brackets with some por-15 and also the axle so i get the suspension ready..
i got a friend that have a body shop so im just gonna have him to the work on the cab floors, corners and probably just have it ready for paint,it has some dents and few little holes..
i know the firewall shaving kit on ebay i think for $99,not sure if i should just get some 18g plates and just cut it to size to cover those holes or get that kit, im also looking that gas hole filler plate, but cant find it,since it has that curve ,it might be better if i find it already with the shape of the hole...

The crossmembers should be the same. It may need to be "persuaded" into place, but it should fit. The bottom of the crossmember where the springs bolt on is bulged to distribute the weight across more surface area and should be under the frame and the top of the corssmember should be under the top of the frame rail, its snug getting it into position, but it should fit.
