Re: 71 GMCw/406

Dude, it was pretty easy. It came precut and he includes instructions and a phone number. Mine isn't perfect and I did it pretty quick but you'd have to look close to find anything wrong with it. However, I'd order the back glass a little big and trim it down yourself.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

Wich board member did you say you got it from? I may have to try it, it just looks so darn good on your truck. I can't belive the difference it made! It has been years since I tried some tint and I always seemed to fight bubbles. If I mess it up the worse that can happen is I have to take it back off and start over I guess. The local shop wants like 160 bucks to do it, plus tint, gotta bail on that.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

Yeah, forget that. And this tint didn't seem to give me problems with the bubbles like the cheap stuff. It's kinda metallic. You just want to make sure you clean the gass several times and use a razor around the edges to get the old stuff off.

I bought it from retro68

Re: 71 GMCw/406

I would lean to build a TH 400. I have destroyed my Th350 3 times and it had a lot of aftermarket parts. I gave up and built a trans break TH400. Just drove it Last night for the 1st time.
Don't be scared to put a 3000 converter in our bigger. The TQ of the 400 is big and will be a fender shaker w/ small converter.

For how it will run depends on cam/head/rod length combo. My little 350 that mad 518 HP ran 12.5's. My 406 killing the tires and destroying the trans. So far has ran 12.0's @ 116mph.

I also recommend going out and getting 3/4 ton drive shaft and bracket.

any other ? hit me up.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

I have been thinkin and I think It might be just as easy to go 700R4. Isnt this roughly the same process as the 400 plus wiring in a swicth for the lockup? I had a thread in another section that gave build specs on the motor. Sometime in future, supercharger, NOS, what would be my best bet? Also I have thought about the rear axel, if Im gonna swap might as well Ford 9" for future upgrade durability. How much does that take, be a good time to do it when I do an axel flip. Still dont know how it runs, the guy that I got the eng built from and sold my other truck to still has not had the time to drive 2.5 hours here and pickup my 90 and bring me a badass radiator with a 700 dollar list price, I got it for 200 cause hes a dealer and it was worked into the truck deal, so untill I get that I still got a lawn ornament agrevating tired of waitin on this guy been like 7 weeks now.......

Definitely go with the blower. NOS will just destroy your engine.

LOL How do you figure Nos will destroy your engine?

Lets see blower, huh constant boost and force on crank rods pistons.

Nos HP and TQ and force only when you hit the button.

When it comes to power adders they are all great. You have to retard timing, add fuel and run colder plug and run higher octane fuel.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

I have always kinda heard the same about NOS. Was always told the steady, consistant added power is better on the whole drivetrain than an instant shock all at once from NOS. Regaurdless it will mainly be a street truck and only see a couple car show races a year. Maybe it will do just fine naturally aspirated. Hope I can finally find out soon.

A blower won't melt your pistons/valves or crack your heads/cylinders and it's a gradual power adder by rpm. NOS will also get you killed on the street if you hit that button at the wrong time.

You could ask these guys from Kinsey Racing why that red engine in their boat belongs to me.

Ok smartass, I don't believe I was talking to you. You run what you want to in your truck. He asked for an opinion and I gave him mine. If you don't like it, move on.

Or....... you could sit down with my uncle Jimmy and his 6 second Pro-Modified boat and ask him the blower/NOS question!

You should take a ride in it. 6 second quarter miles on the water is alot scarier than on the pavement. Bring an extra pair of underwear.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

Got my 71 moved back up in the driveway and pulled the grille off to send back to classic parts. While I was at it I dumped just a lilttle bit more antifreeze in and it came right out. So I look at that as hope that the block is fine because the fluid level didnt move from where it was. Didnt have time to do anymore because someone came and paid for my fairlaine and I went and paid for my C-30 motorhome and drove it home Drove like a dream for something of its age. Next free time I get will go to dropping the starter and replacing the plug.

Re: 71 GMCw/406

Well the weather is finally getting nice enough to work on my projects again. Today I decided would be a good day to plumb in my radiator and finally after 9 months of waiting fire this beast up. While filling the block with antifreeze I hear it running on the ground. The freeze plug behinde the starter was laying on the headers, lovely This motor has not even been run by me yet! Was broke in on the engine stand by the builder. When I got it there wasnt even a water pump on it. A little fluid came out while instaling and was the color of the oarangeish antifreeze so I assumed I was in the clear. Now I am hoping and hoping hard that it did no damage to the block. I would be devastated

Re: 71 GMCw/406

I know right! And as for your pictures I can get you a couple tomorrow. My temporary radiator mounts are pretty slick!!!(not really its just gotta get it accross town) And my new grille from ClassisParts somehow ripped itself open by the headlight buckets over the winter. Its very srange.
