Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Little more work. All the parts arrived from ord except the rear shocks (they were stolen) and still waiting on the custom leafs..
Got the rear frame sections straightened back up. Everything is now off the frame. It will be going to the powdercoater here soon. This is what it looked like after getting the welded hitch off. Now. I wanted to use their new crossmember on my frame. Some custom work needs to be done but its pretty simple. Just need to shorten the 74-87 engine towers and then drill a few holes. Thats about it. This is one side done. I really want to fill a few of the holes in the frame. I know i could just weld them up but they are a bit bit. Any recommendations on what to put in the holes? Little metal slugs of some kind?

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Just an update. Crossmember is in. Modified the upper crossmember pieces to fit. Im not filling all the holes on the frame, just a couple that were excessive.
Im just a couple minutes away from sending this to powdercoating and blasting. Is there anything i should prep before i send it off?? Also, my custom ORD leafs showed.. I will get some pics of those bad boys. Not that anyone sees these threads anymore.

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Just an update for myself. I feel like this is a waste of time. Crazy how this site has slowed down...
I ordered a bunch of stuff from ORD. This will be going on the new frame. Basic rust repair. Install on the bronco bob cage. Never touched a cage before so this was fun. out of all the welds and notches i feel like i only screwed up one. Going to make the front to bars removable so the cage is easier to get out and powder coat. Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Your doing a fine job on everything. I have started threads that no one ever responded to, you just can't expect people to always comment.
I do like that style of cage. Keep up the good work and don't lose your Mojo |

Haa, ya. I do ask questions but dont get many answers... I was wanting to completely seal in the rockers.. Sand blast them, epoxy, then completely panel them in so no mud ever gets in them again. I saw a guy do that here once but i cant find the post.

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Nice work! Always amazed by the amount of rust a lot of you guys tackle. Can't wait to see how that cage comes out. My Blazer came with a full Bronco Bob cage, but with the regular back half instead of the family cage. Wish I had the full family cage like yours!

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
I'm looking at the same cage from bronco bob. I to am a cage virgin. So how involved is putting this kit together? I have a friend who is a certified welder that can help me. How well did it go together? Can you give us some more pics? Always remember, any info you put out there somebody can always learn from your experiences.

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
I dont see why you couldnt seal them off, would probably be easier to just "enhance" the drain system of the rockers and coat them in a ton of some sort of rust encapsulation. I even joked around with a buddy of mine about making a little door in the front of both of them so that you could get a hose in there and really clean it out good. Just buy an extra set of rockers, putting new ones in every 30 years isnt that bad is it?

I did it with just me and my kid. It wasnt bad. The hardest part is the side bars. You have to cope them at a really really weird angle. I messed up one side, but it will still work. I can get more pics. I plan on making the front removable. Im taking the two front bars and having the lower legs bent outward to allow for more leg room getting in. I will get pics of that later also. Quote:

Re: Started a new project. 1970 Blazer.
Slow going, but im moving... I picked up some 3/4 ton axles. 10 bolt front end, and whatever the rear is. THey are out of a 78. 4.10 gears. IM going with the ORD cross over steering so im going to blow these apart, new brakes, new bearings, and pick up some more parts from ORD. Unfortunately this knuckle doesnt work so i have to buy the flat top knuckle. Here is some misc. crap pics. Tearing apart the axles is fun. If anyone knows WHAT size these allan studs are for the hub PLEASE tell me. I went through everything i had and couldnt find the right size. What a PITA. Buried in all the grease i found the snap ring. That was fun having one side NOT have that and this side did. I couldnt figure it out. So much grease. Dana. 45-11 So that should be 4.10 gears. Looks ok. There was some rusty corrosion on the ring gear. Hopefully that just cleans right off. We will see... This is my trans cover. There were 20 plus holes in this thing. Im trying to get it good enough to hide in linex.. Im debating on finding another one. I know they go for a couple hundred and thats not bad, but i keep adding a 100 here and a 100 there. It adds up really quick. First round of grinding. Need to do some metal work, then regrind. I should get it PRETTY good, my metal skills are ok, but not good enough to get this to 100%

That's going to be a completely new truck by the time you're done.
I hate moving during the middle of a project. I had to do that twice, and it was a royal pain. |

Are the pics showing up? Ya, it will be. This is a second frame, building it up from scratch and then slapping the body on it.... I just need more room, we have an offer on a house and are just waiting right now. Sucks.

How did that roll cage turn out? I just purchased the same one.
Your build is looking good. I just started to take my Blazer apart. |
