I took a few pics here, but there are more pages if anyone may want me to take more. Very informative thread so far. Eric

Hey Eric. I will pay all the cost for you to go to kinkos or somewhere and get a good copy of all that paperwork to mail to me. Once I get it I will scan it and make a PDF to post for anyone who wants it.

You are trying to determine that the NOS unit in the Box that you have is for a 73 & up or if it will be correct for a 72 & earlier install??? Is there a 1972 Truck Cruise Control thread regarding these? My LONGHORN has a Cruise Control on it; I think that the Dealer installed it. My Truck is a BB if it matters. It's installed exactly as I purchased the truck and I have yet to touch it so it is as it is installed. Would pics of mine be helpful ???

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Pics always help RPOZ11. Yes, we are discussing whether or not Eric's (Toomuchstuff) cruise control would be correct for a 72' cruise control system. We know what is correct 68-70', and 71-72', but not sure if this setup would be considered correct for a late 72' truck as the 73' models would be coming out, or early 73 when 72's were still on car lots and had to get sold. Re: Cruise control I.D.
OK, well when I have a chance I will post images off of my truck.
Do you just need the inner fender mount bracketry images or do you wish me to take more of the rest of the system? TOO MUCH STUFF: Are there any GM part #'s stamped into any of these brackets?

Re: Cruise control I.D.
The "H" shaped bracket has "made in canada" and AP 330128. Nothing on the other bracket.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
OK, bear with me that this is still installed on my LongHorn and this truck has been sitting for many years now; so pardon my dust
I tried to clean up the pics as best I could. Looks like I need to do a really good cleaning on this stuff. My system is not installed in the same location as the one above with the Orange Driver Fender showing. You will see that mine is installed farther back towards the Master Cylinder/Booster areas.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
OhOneWS6:
My system looks identical to yours; although I have never compared these before. The unit with the speedo cables going in and out looks identical to yours. My 2 inner fender brackets look identical to TooMuchStuff's brackets. So, I cant tell the difference. I think that my Truck is, without looking, a late March 1972 or early April 1972 build. My engine code stamping reads T0222XXX, being February 22, 1972. Add.... As I recall, the 1972 year was a donor year for transitioning into the newer model, so I feel some things that are relative in 1973 were installed on 1972 trucks...or available in the 1972 year over the counter for 72 and earlier installations. Tooling up for any changes in the truck series regarding the Cruise Control units I doubt were redone into the 73 and up models until maybe a later year period. From what I recall from over the years, these truck CC systems were very similar from 72-78.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
The lighted Cruise Master switch and the throttle-stud are definitely 73-Up. The 71-72 systems used non-lighted Cruise Master under dash switches and a bent bracket that attached to the throttle bracket. See photos below of the '72 parts.

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Dan, we realize that there is a correct 71-72 setup like what you have posted, but we are up in the air as the setup like have been posted in the thread as being possibly looked at as being correct as well for 72's. There is correct from the assembly manual, and then there were some 72's that were probably on lots in 73-74'. I order to make a sell, I am sure a dealership added parts on that would make that sell. That is why this setup is in question as there are a bunch of these style setups on 72's, as proof in the thread. Back then, dealerships had to do whatever was needed to make that sale. Even in 92', my father wanted a metallic blue 1 ton 4x4 Chevy. A St. Louis dealership had one in that color, but came originally from the factory with a bench seat. My father wanted buckets, so that dealership removed the bench seat from it and took a set of buckets that matched the interior out of another truck on the lot. Low and behold, my dad got the truck he wanted. I consider this cruise setup to be the same.
On a side note, Dan, I have been collecting the correct piece for a correct cruise system for my 71', but I found my 72' questionable cruise in a 72' in a junkyard and am going to install it on my 72' crew cab I have in the works. Trevor Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Dan, also the switch you have pictured out of the 72' accessory booklet, how do we know that the switch in the booklet is the correct one for 72'? As the picture was taken from a 1970 Chevelle/El Camino SS dash. I own a 70' Chevelle and I know the dash and the knobs on the radio are a 69-70' only knob. The accessory catalog is not always correct on pics, as proof, the compass has a bowtie on it in the pic, which the correct says GM, the AM/FM radio picture looks more like the units put in 73' and up, and all of the original 72' 8 track players I have seen, do not look like the older one that is pictured in the accessory booklet. I am not trying to attack anyone about this matter, there are just inconsistencies in the accessory booklet and I like to get to the bottom of things like this. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
The non-lighted Cruise Master under-dash switch has mounting holes on 1 1/2" centers as shown on page 5 of the installation instructions dated 8-13-71. The wider lighted switch (73 and up) cannot be bolted into the 1 1/2" CL holes. The switch shown in the accessory catalog is clearly fastened to a non-truck dash because the switch was used for more than one application. Attached is a photo of a correct non-lighted switch in a 72 (not mine). Most people would not know the difference nor would they care.
I assume the system you have could be easily be installed into a 72 and function properly. We have all seen some "exceptions" to rules regarding these trucks and the 73-up system in a 72 wouldn't be a big problem. I am basing my understanding of these systems on dated GM installation and service materials showing components as well as part numbers. Your system is VERY nice (I especially like the instruction card)! Last edited by DANTIP; 01-04-2010 at 04:29 PM. |

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Dan, I had no idea that the switch did not bolt up the same way. I do realize that the cruise system would extend to different model types, but it still is weird that certain truck stuff is different when it comes to accessories then every other GM vehicle line. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Trevor,
The non-lighted switch, used in cars and trucks until 72, is narrower than the lighted switch also used in cars and trucks 73-Up. I didn't know this until I tried to fasten a lighted switch into the holes drilled for the non-lighted switch. Here is a photo of mine purchased from a board member as well as an NOS switch posted by another board member. Dan |

Re: Cruise control I.D.
yeah, I remember all the cruise control threads from 6-7 years ago. The pic was from Rod. I often go back to some of the old threads for things, I miss some of the older members that have left. There was a lot of good information back then. I remember there were a few other members out your way that had loaded trucks whom are no longer around. Thanks for the heads up on the switch. One day I might find one of those, but for now, I will make the 2 lighted switches do. How's your truck doing Dan? Mine is in pieces, and it's too cold to work on it here. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.
Sorry for taking so long to add images of my system in my 72 LongHorn...
This is a 402/TH400 factory with the Cruise Control added. 2 NOS Switches, showing the wiring. Look at where the switch is installed on my dash, and the ground cable going to the steering column cover bolt. I have a pic below of the brake pedal assignment for the Cruise switch. The one bracket holding the brake pedal switch looks home made and/or dealer made. I would like to see other installations from you guys to see how yours compares to mine.
