Found a fuel tank at the salvage yard that was actually useable. Installed and fired up the engine. Pulled the master cylinder and am in the process of rebuilding it.

Chop, cut, rebuild. Isn't that a show? Cut bumper brackets, weld, cut, weld, fit. Two down two to go. Putting a 67-72 rear bumper is more pain for the gain. Got temp tires for front 225/70/15 to replace the 13+ year old 235/60/15. Now at 27.4 tall it filled the fender and closer to the 245/45/18 waiting for crossmember install. Picked up Flaming River manual 15:1 rack.

I have never been much for the fake PATINA paint jobs but I gave it a shot and love it ! Grey primer, smeared on some black then shot white, rubbed thru to the black then shot it with matte clear. Before and after....

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Disassembled the rest of my 400SBC in preparation to take it over to the machine shop tomorrow. Removed the entire serp setup from a donor 350 and made a big mess in my garage that now needs to be cleaned up.

Got the torsion bars out, spindles and hubs off. Upper arms off,now to the lowers. 53 yr old torsion bars do not like to be removed, lol. Didn't realize front brake drums would be riveted to the hubs.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Adjusted new Lokar cables and changed out the governor weights and springs a few times now the truck shifts nice and smooth when driven normally but when you punch it she kicks down a gear and revs to 7000 before snapping into the next gear. Wow!!! What a beast. OMG. The new 700R4 was stack shifting and I wasn't able to rev the engine past 3000 rpm before she would shift to the next gear so I wasn't getting anywhere near the peak torque. I figure we have about 425hp and about the same torque and it feels like a corvette when you punch it now!

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Grind off those rivets and knock them out. No need for them. Rebuild the hub and install fresh drums or turn the old drums. No more rivets needed.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
My buddy helped me take the fuel door and filler tube off a 95 suburban and mount it on the back driver side were the previous owner bastardized it with a square hole, just big enough to get the cap on. We also pulled the back tailgate cross brace off and repaired where they had welded on a retainer to cover the wood. I'll get some better pics a bit later.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Still have to bolt the bed down but we got it sitting on the frame so I snapped a few pics. This is the first time the truck has been somewhat together since the paint job. Just have to do the final fitments bolt down. Keep in mind that the bed still needs to be moved forward some and placed in the correct location. We just sat it on there to get it facing the right way in the shop. We took it apart with the nose facing inward and we ended up trapping the truck in the shop when we took everything apart. We cleaned up a little and got the truck facing the correct way so we could finish working on the bed using the lift and still get the rest of the truck in and out of the shop, if that makes any sense to yall.
Also, painted up the grille today so I can start getting it ready to go back on the truck. Grille is not perfect and I hope to eventually switch to alum or chrome grill and bumpers. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Finally got the steering connected up after more than half a dozen trips to parts store to try to get tie rods to work. Ended up with custom tie rod adjuster sleeves from DCA Racing to connect 5/8 outer to 11/16 inner. Such a relief to have this behind us.

Now that the days are shorter, plus I hate driving at night in the rain, I installed a pair of driving lights. Now you'll see me coming from miles away ... and I'll see you, too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
I meant to take a pic with the old truck all loaded down, but forgot. Anyway, me and my wife took it to Home Depot (about an hour drive) and loaded it up with a 4' vanity, mirror, 15 gallons of paint, shop lights, faucet and other random little things. Put the old truck to work today haha. Did stop for ice cream on the way home. Oh yea, and loaded it down with groceries too! Beautiful day to be driving an old chevy!
