Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Ok, so I thought I would get my arm rests mounted, but ran into a snag. The holes in the door panel aren't in the right spot.

The panels are metal, which I thought meant 71 and older. The arm rests I have were listed as 68-71.

Looking at things now, I think the holes in my panel were probably for some aftermarket pull strap. The holes in there now are farther apart than my armrests are wide, and they are about 2 inches higher on the panel than the top of the door handle.

From looking at the catalogs, I think the armrest is supposed to share a centerline with the door and window cranks. Just not sure on the fore and aft positioning.

Can someone measure distance from the back of the door panel to the first hole, and from the door handle back to the second hole?

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Haven't done a whole lot lately, except collecting parts.

I traded the 20's for: a disassembled 383 short block, a set of 906 casting Vortecs, Crane self aligning roller rockers, and some ralley trim rings for the truck.

Found a great deal on a set of new amber and red side markers to replace the clear ones that are currently on my truck.

Decided the other day that I would rather build a roller cammed motor, so I put the 383 short block on craigslist to see what offers I could get. Tonight a guy brought over a standard bore 4 bolt main 350 block, and a early 90's 350 shortblock that would accomodate the roller cam build. He included the fuel injection stuff in case I wanted to use it. And he tossed in $100 cash to make the deal.

Stash of parts now looks like this:
Roller shortblock
Vortec heads
Roller rockers
4 bolt block to sell, or trade for other stuff needed(thinking Vortec compatible intake manifold)
Fuel injection stuff that may get flipped for other parts needed

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Finally brought the truck back home today. I put it in the shop last week because I didn't have time to track down the oil leaks myself.

My trucks previous owner was a fan of Jegs chrome, and the cheap ass oil pan he bought was the entire problem. I probably should've just bought a new pan, but the guy was able to get it squared up and tightened down where it won't leak anymore. I wouldn't recommend that Chinese chrome crap to anyone, you get what you pay for.

After the oil was dried up, he found that the o-ring seal around the kickdown solenoid was letting fluid past. Also had a leak at the shift shaft. Replaced both parts (solenoid was too cheap not to, and the shift shaft was toast) and now the tranny is dry as well.

Current plan of action is to fix my brake pedal rod tomorrow evening, then replace the clear side markers with the amber/red set I picked up on here later in the week. Maybe I'll be able to cruise a little this weekend.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Got a little bit done this weekend.

Fixed my brake pedal rod. Before the fix the pedal moved about an inch and a half before it ever bottomed out in the master. After adjusting, it bottoms out almost immediately.

Got all my parts that I've been collecting on the truck. So here are the pics of my new side markers, tail light lenses, and the rallys finally complete with trim rings and flat caps.

Nice truck. I once had an 85 chevy 4x4 with the same brake problem.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Bought an aluminum trim plate to mount my radio a little cleaner than the previous hack job. While I was back there, I noticed some loose wires hanging down. Turns out my trucks PO ran everything off of the front channels on the radio.

A dash mounted tweeter, a 6x9 and a 5" round speaker on each side were daisy chained together, and all ran off of the LF or RF channel. I spent today cleaning up that wiring nightmare a little. The dollar store tweeters are history. The 6x9's are now on the rear channels, and the 5" rounds are alone on the front channels.

Next plan is to get my arm rests installed on the door panels, then reinstall them. After that I can button up the 6x9's (the speaker grills interfere with the door panel coming on/off). Last thing to do on this little mini project will be finishing the trim plate install and sticking the radio back in.

Once I am sure everything is working like I want, I'll tuck the speaker wires up to their final positions and tie wrap them out of the way.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Also, an interesting side note. I had a suspicion that my truck was originally gold. The little bit of the SPID that was legible showed a tan/white interior. Upon removing the door panels I was able to confirm this. Panel came off to reveal faded, but original looking gold paint.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Fred get rid of the mat in the bed ,,and the gas filler ,,you can almost put on a new rubber gasket ring on with out movin the tank,USE A LITTLE GREASE AROUND THE RING ,but the smell is coming from the seal ring on your sending unit on the tank,,replace it,and when you do put some sealer around the rubber ring,,it helped stop the smell in my truck cab. Your door panel may have to be changed to except door arm rest ,,they usually have a bolt screw behind the panel to screw in a bolt ,,to hold the arm rest.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Haven't done much lately. Timing is skipping around. Not quite sure why, but I can turn the distributor with the hold down installed. Wasn't a problem until recently.

Most of my time has been spent on the garage/household stuff lately. I've got a shoulder surgery scheduled for Feb 1st, so I am trying to get all the important stuff taken care of ahead of my toys. Hoping I have a chance to replace the hold down tomorrow and see if I can get the timing locked in.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Got the truck sorted out this evening. Damn cheap hold down just wouldn't clamp like it should. Replaced it, set the timing, and went for a nice drive. Truck is running great.

Still want to play with the timing curve, but that will come once I am able to get out in the garage and play in a few months. At least I'll be able to go for a nice leisurely drive through the country while I'm out of work.

Re: Project: 69 C10 "Junk Yard Dog"

Not a whole lot going on here since surgery. I did manage to get some help from my father last weekend. He came up and helped me change plugs and wires, since I had a few wires that looked pretty rough.

Bought a battery box to replace the rotted one currently residing in the truck. Hoping to get it cleaned up and painted when the brace comes off my arm.

Until then, I'll just continue to play with the new baby girl that we just welcomed to the family.
