Do you want your truck to save gas or kick a$$?

HMM...what would I rather do;

1) sit around with my truck buds bar-b-q some red meat pound some brewskis and compare horsepower, cams, carbs, time slips etc.
or
2) sip tea, needlepoint and do MPG comparisons.

I choose #1
You've got to pay, if you want to play!

I'll take the frame twisting power of a big block any day.
Did the cammed out small block thing....no thanks. Big blocks get you off the line in a hustle, and with out many mods.
You can build an engine to make mega horse power at 7000 RPM, but you're never at 7000.

I have the 454 in my 85 C20 with the 3.21 and 4 speed manual. I get 15-16 mpg and can pull anything I want. My first BB in a truck and with the fuel mileage I can't complain.

In the past 30 years about 90% of Fords are still on the road, the other 10% made it home.

I've seen up to a 472 inch small block so why bother with a big block?

I vote for BB.I have a mildly tricked out 350 and a bone stock 396 in my other truck you can tell the difference.I haven't watched it closely(afraid to)but didn't notice to much difference in mileage between the two.Going up hills I don't have to push on the accelerator as much with the 396.While gas is a concern I wouldn't mind somethin with a 454 in the future.

Um... does that mean that my balanced .060 over 350 is a bad or a good thing? There's just something about hitting 6500-7000 RPM with a small block that makes me think of wood... err..... trees....

Just wonderin'

That sounds expensive. The more radical you go with a small block, the more expensive it becomes...and often its driveability and reliability come into question, not to mention how hard the mouse has to work to put out the power.

It would be fun to see two people build 500 horse powerplants...one being a big block and the other being a small block. I would like to see the build cost, and how each performes in one of our trucks.

The small vs. big debate will go on forever.

I like the big blocks. Had a 55' Chevy 1/2 Ton Short Bed once and it had a Hemi in it with push buttons on the dash for the transmission. Boy, could that thing run. Talk about burn outs. I always loved it when I went for gas and always had the guy pop the hood to check the oil and always got a -"WOW". Yes, they use to put the gas in for you and check your oil. The cost (if I remember right) at the time was around .45 cents a gallon. This was in the early 60's. Before a lot of you guys were even born. That was the fasest truck I ever had.

I have a 350 4 speed in my truck, and dad has a 454 4 speed,ad the BB gets better mileage,so with this info,I went and bought a truck with a BB.I figure it's gonna do as good as my SB,and not work as hard,it's a no brainer.

Camed SB are fun,and run good, but a moderate BB is an awesome thing.

Interesting how the sound of an engine is suddenly negative when we're not talking about gas engines

Big-block stuff seems to cost an absolute mint - even for used/abused hard parts. I think I'd build a big-inch smallblock. 400's had good torque, but its hard to find a buildable core. 383 seems like a large investment only to get a slightly better 350. 415-454ci Motown-based SBC is attractive when you look at the price & variety of aftermarket parts for SBC vs. BBC.

I like the i6 idea also. Somewhere along the lines of a 4V or EFI 292 - just to be different.

wooohooo 147 votes and big block is winning by 7...
i would have figured a bigger lead though...
sorry u2 I'm hooked on my burb now and a i6 or 292 or even 350 just wont cut it for a big body beast. still wont go diesel unless i needed constant pulling power.. i can get my inconstant pulling power whenever with my 454.
