I have to store them in a nice climate controlled area where they will not be subject to collateral damage...LOL! I don't want the wife running into them with the vacuum cleaner. THAT'S IT! I will store them in the closet next to the vacuum cleaner...they will never be touched...LOL!

Nice! I personally would do as you said and leave that gate alone and use it as wall art. Sorta the centerpiece for your trophy wall

I would probably do the same with the steering wheel as they are repop'n the 68 wheels now.

As far as storage goes, my dad has a N.O.S. tailgate for his 56' Nomad stored under his bed, wrapped in a quilt with 2" foam rubber on the face of it.

As you said, Score of a lifetime... I have the original sales order sheet & folder from my 71' Burb, I have been meaning to see if the original owner still lives there to see if he has any other documents from it. I doubt I would ever get as lucky as you did though!

Thanks for all the great comments guys! Don't ever give up the parts search...they are out there...my story is living proof of that. I should have bought lottery tickets the day I called Leo and found out he still had the gate...LOL!

68Stepside...I fully intend to let Leo drive the truck when it is done...that will be really fun!

Dennis, Leo looks alot rougher than he really is. He is in great shape and lively as heck. I had a hard time believeing that I was talking to a 78-yr old guy on the phone. He has two Lincolns in his garage that he is going to restore...a '67 convertible and an old Lincoln race car from the 40's or so. If it takes me a couple of years to finish the Longhorn, he will still be there.

BTW...the stepside is becoming a contemporary RATROD if there is such a thing...flat black and cream colored.

I can't believe you won first place with MY truck! I knew you would do right by it!

Stories like this are what make this hobby so cool. Years ago I did a title search on my 62 Impala. Original owner was still living in the same house. Took the semi restored car over and talked for hours. When we were getting ready to leave he asked me to wait a moment. Came back with the original bill of sale and gave it to me. Later I took a photo of it, blew it way up and framed it. Now when I show the car I hang the picture on one of the windows. That's a great conversation starter.

At any rate that is an incredible score! Now you have a good story to go with the truck.

classicchev...almost...I told him to name his price and I am embarassed to say what he wanted...he would not take any more. I tipped his grandson $20 for helping move a bunch of parts to get to my parts. They were both surprised and extremely pleased with my generosity. I have something special planned for Leo when the truck is done. I am hoping that if I do a nice enough job on the Longhorn that he will ask me to restore his old Lincoln circle track racer! Now, that is a rare beast! He knows what restoration parts are worth...I think he just wanted me to have these.

How interesting! Since the gentleman stored the tailgate out of the weather, I wonder what one of those computer paint readers would come up with on that tailgate's paint. You probably have the best original example of that color in the country.

Well, you already said the first thing on my mind, I think I would have gone a played the lottery right away! What an incredible story. A guy I know had a similar experience with a fuelie 57 Corvette that he had, and tracked down the original owner, who acutally gave him a bunch of racing stories on the car.

70GMC Bob, He removed the springs and sway to soften the ride. He never loaded the truck so he wanted the cushy ride! When he test drove the truck it had a full size camper on it. The dealer removed the camper and when he drove it without the camper it was too harsh for him...LOL! I will put the sway bar back but may also leave the springs out since I don't intend to load it either.

Here is another part he "gave" me. I can now say that I have ONE NOS part!

The same thing happened to me when i bought Andy's Longhorn. And its the same color!
I got the truck from a friend who has a garage. He got me in contact with the guy who bought it new. He lived in Greg Neck MD. When we changed the title over, he said he took the tailgate off a week after he bought it so he could haul a camper and never put it back on....And he still had it. So he gave it to me.
It looks like new. Still shiney. Not a scratch on it. And it came with the primered hardware. Its wraped in a blanket in my attic.
