Re: Any one Chop there Top???
I purchased a 68 C-10 that had the top chopped 3" by a guy, in the Kansas City area, that has a lot of experience in this type of work. He cut the windshield first and then cut the top to match the glass. It is easier to do that than to cut the top and then match the glass to it. THe top was taken down in sections and there is a story in this month's issue of Sport Truck Magazine (Oct. 07)that is close to how he did it. I cannot find the welds in his work and it is very smooth, as is the door handle removal and the new mirror mounts (one piece windows)
Yes it is pink, that is the color of the primer/sealer---he planned on painting it red. Last edited by piecesparts; 08-22-2007 at 08:22 PM. |

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
I cut the glass in my chop top longhorn.....but, you had better know that it takes a glass cutter with 10-15 yrs under his belt to do that job! The flat glass (doors & rear), are no big issue. If you havent played with glass, you best leave that windsheild job to some of the better shops in your area. And no it wont be cheap! Most shops in my area were talkin 450-600 bones to cut that windsheild, & were totally honest(we may break 1 before we get the finished sheild....& you are payin for that one too!) Forget about your diamond blade.....I doubt it will work for you , my bet is it will bind & break your glass I have been running my 4" chop top since the mid 90's, & love it. However, for a daily driver, I would do a 2 1/2-3" chop as a max figure. Best of luck, L Oops.....pics http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
#1 There is no seal made for a chop, due to so many differnt chop top ideas. However a good glass guy will make the factory seal fit like a glove, mine did.
#2 The glass cutter is the trick and keep in mind, he may have to cut a couple windshields before he gets it right. That is on your billfold and not his. Mine was experienced enough that he got it right the first time. A good cutter will grind or polish the glass to size and not use a glass cutter--so to speak. The guy that I used has had people fro all over the USA come to their shop, since they are the best. He owns Sunrise Glass in Merriam, Kansas. Many people said they tried many and then ended up going to him. He did m y glass and made a special rear window for my truck ---including drilling holes and have the rear glass heat treated so that it wiill "POP OUT" like a van's window for about $600.00. I got off cheap for what I had done. |

If you look in the middle of the post, I gave the name of the company. However, here is more info. Sunrise Glass CO 9003 Johnson Drive, Kansas City, KS 66102 (913) 722-5167 The name of the owner is Todd Craft Every person for his own--4" chop was to much for me. His dad started the business and he learned well from him. Last edited by piecesparts; 08-24-2007 at 12:00 PM. |

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
IMHO... the roofline on the 67-72 trucks was one of the few things that gm got right the first time. i've never really cared for the chopped look on these particular trucks. that's just my $.02. i can see where if people didn't do this type of thing then every truck out there would almost look the same and make the customizing of these trucks a stale and predictable cookie cutter operation. which defeats the purpose of customizing. to each their own.

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
Cut the whole thing off and put a '57 T-Bird windshield frame and vent mirrors on it....much easier.

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
I like the way the step sides look chopped better than the fleetsides, not sure why though. I'm planning on having mine chopped to just above the vent window hinge this winter but we'll see what the wife has to say about that. I played with a pic of it in paint and this is what I came up with.

Re: Any one Chop there Top???
I have a 72 real similar to the pick posted earlier from Bonneville. I'm working on getting some pics. I know there aren't many fans of chopped tops, but my grandfather did this one back in the early 80's and I just recently was able to buy it from a guy he sold it to. My grandfather had a major love for these trucks, he ran a body shop and restoring these trucks was his passion, He was killed in an auto accident in his favorite 70 SWB in 2002 and this 72 chopped top is the only truck I could locate that he had done. My plan is to utilize alot of parts off his truck to redo this truck. Unfortunately the cab was crushed, so I'm probably stuck with a chop top but I'm a fan of both you don't see many. This one has a personal value. I'll try to get pics on here tonite.

The original owner, Larry Craft, had a heart attack few years ago, but todd has taken over and can do what his dad used to do. They are great people.
