I went ahead and got the tool, rivets, and the "seal" that the actual vent window glass sits in as my drivers side pivot rod (on the bottom) is broken. I bought a "new" glass frame only for that window...hence the need for the rivet, tool etc.

And, yes you can remove the vent window assembly without removing the main door glass. I have had this one out 3 times already. Wrong rubber the first time, found out the second time that the pivot rod was broken and a 3rd time to fish out a screw that I dropped into the door that I couldn't reach with it in :O

I still have not completed mine. I've not order the rivet yet and I still need to paint the vent frame.

nlped - idea for you and me instead of the tool, maybe we can find a window glass place and take the frame there. Shouldn't take that long and they might not charge us.

Benntn, that would be great, but I just ordered the tool, rivets and other assundry parts to try and finish this project. All this work, money and bleeding for a little wind whistle. Hmmm, hope it's worth it. I'll keep you posted. You can borrow the tool once I finish mine.

As soon as I finish rounding up all of the parts I will do my own thread on the subject including the rest of the door rubber and replacing the door pins as well. I'm hoping for a relatively rattle and wind whistle free result. Here's hoping

My dad and I just did this last week on my 77. I got a kit from Steele rubber. The kit was very high quality and the pieces fit very well and look exactly like the originals. My only gripe was that it didn't include rivets for the riveted rubber seal. I tried standard rivets but the rivet gun was too wide to get down in the narrow channel. To get around this, I got some 4-40 screws and nuts and cut them to the correct length. They work just fine at holding the seal in place.

Another tip to this job is WD40. It is your best friend when trying to get the big curved rubber seal into it's channel. It also helps when installing the finished window into the door. My dad had the idea of taking an old flat tip screw driver and grinding the tip down so it's smooth and wont tear the rubber. This also was a huge help in getting the curved rubber piece to lock in.

Don't feel bad, the first time we attempting this we ended up just putting the truck back together. After getting familiar with how the windows were assembled, we were able try it a second time and finish the job.

Ok I just got my vent seals today from Brothers! It took a month to get them though. They did however give me express shipping and they also called me back when they said they would, so their CS made up for the "out of stock" seals which wasn't indicated on their site. But now, I can't get the thing to go into the frame. I've put p-jelly on them and they just will not go in. Man, what a pain this little project has been. And to think I still got the other door to do. Any tips or moral support would be greatly appreciated. LOL. Remind me again please why I didn't just buy a new truck....

It would be a lot cheaper to have someone install the rubber for you than to "Buy a new truck". These are classice. New trucks do not turn heads. I could go on and on. I had a body shop install my new rubber and man is it nice and quiet now. Yes, they can be a pain and that is why I paid to have them installed in my truck.

This is exactly what I plan to do. I'm fairly sure I don't have sense enough to do it myself.

The assembly isn't difficult if you understand how to take the door panel off. The window doesn't need to be removed either.

The actual vent rubber is not real fun to replace. Nice when done though!

I paid $40.00 to have installed and one of the best $40.00 I spent. $20.00 each side. I would have paid $80.00. I have heard too many horro storys on here and other places so that is why I dicided to pay an expert to intall the rubber and rivets. They did a great job.

My 86 also has the 2 piece vent window seals on both sides. I tried the one piece units from LMC but they just don't seem to work very well. Too many gaps. Has anyone successfully installed the 2-piece seals from LMC in an 81-87? Also, is the rivet tool mentioned earlier from LMC as well?

Yes I have. I too bought the one piece from LMC but sent them back and got the two peace from Brothers. LMC doesn't have the tool. I also got the tool from brothers for $5. However I've not installed the vent back in the door. I've been lazy lately but it keeps the truck in the garage.
