Re: Higher speedometers...
CPNEJR, your 3.07 gear will rev just like my 3.07 truck... the top photo. Tranny doesn't matter, both have a one to one final ratio. Yours would actually be a littlelower due to no slippage.

Re: Higher speedometers...
Ive had mine go around back to zero, at about twenty on the second trip around it starts to bounce alot(I figure thats about 100-110 real mph). I'm putting an autometer 160 in its place but I need to find the right gear for the tranny to get it right.

Re: Higher speedometers...
My stock 350/TH350/3.73 combo with 28" tires I could hit 100 at about 4800 rpm. By that time I usually ran out of road and had to lift it. If you have 3.42 or 3.07 gears and a correct speedo, you could go alot faster.

Re: Higher speedometers...
Oh ya, It's basically possible to do it in anything you guys are driving. I don't reccomend it but I will admit....last year heading down I-80, middle of nowhere in Nevada, a ricer with a wing/ground effects, etc, etc, started to pass me. The 49 Stude likes to run around 80 on the interstate so he was going about 90, couldn't let that happen. So with a 350ci, 3:50 rearend, turbo 350, we basically walked away from him. My wife didn't even look that worried. I'm sure my 71, once finished will handle way better.

Re: Higher speedometers...
I go out and set my own land speed records out on the county roads. It's kinda scary when the road is only 2+ cars wide. I keep telling myself I'll put in a 4 speed or something, just so I can go a little faster. My buddy and I hit 130 in his Z28. Yeah, its stupid. But we're still setting the goal at 150 (but possibly somewhere safer like the drag strip). Oh well, just curious.

Re: Higher speedometers...
this is nice fun talk but would everyone PLEASE slow down. there is no point of seeing what she'll do. I think it would be better to do the math and save the rest for bench racing.
disclaimer; I have done stupid things like this in the past but will never admit it to my kids. this is but one example http://keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?Id=0,54237 Last edited by 68C15; 01-29-2007 at 07:39 AM. |

Re: Higher speedometers...
I have a turbo 350 tranny and with the 411 stock rear gear, I'm burying the needle everywhere I go. How do you figure out what speedo output gear on the transmission you need? I don't think just changing the speedo gear will do it. Plan on dropping to 307s or 342 rear gear with an eaton posi unit within the next month.

Re: Higher speedometers...
I only ever did it once. Straight highway, middle of the day, no traffic, highway was seperated by concrete barrier, so hopefully I would have only killed myself I stomped on it and it got up to 90 real quick and then it seemed like forever to bust 100. It was like 90...91....92.......93..............94, etc... The truck has an "older 350" (I think a 79 out of a truck?) so it probably only has like 220 hp or something like that with a 700R4 (left in 3rd gear) and a 3.73 rear.
Other than that, she almost never sees much past 75. That's a great highway crusing speed. If a SC police officer is reading this, I was in GA. If a GA officer is reading this replace "highway" with "dragstip." I made the whole thing up anyway

Re: Higher speedometers...
A friend of mine regularly does 160+ (videos to prove it) in his 1979 Trans Am with a sadistic 455 Olds. He has 2.41's I think in the rear end, came from the factory that way. I was with him doing 140 once and that was good enough for me. My dad's stock 1974 ford f100 with a 390/c6/3.73 will do 100 realy easy and then keep going, probably doing 110 when we lift. My 1971 K5 can hit 100 but I didn't like it and it takes forever.

Re: Higher speedometers...
That doesn't have a donut wheel, that's the haze from my junk windshield.
I normally get a lot of flack for this photo, saying it is fake. Before some one says something about it, the black line on the side of the honda is not her door open, but my antenna that was on the wrong side of the truck (other photos to prove that, and it's color) It is real, and I had been doin 100 just before, but had to lift. I have photos of my Ex's contour at 100, my old town car pegged ar 85 (woo hoo...eighty friggen five) A shop truck pegged at 85, our old poS-10 blazer with a digital speedo reading 136 if I remember correctly... I used to have a snap shot of my old honda Civic Si at 125.... Maybe I am crazy. |

Re: Higher speedometers...
My Saturn with 100hp will pull 100 mph. Just takes it like a mile to get there...and it has to be in 4th gear, not 5th, lol. I've had my truck to maybe 110-105 a few times, but it felt very unsafe to drive it that fast so I backed off quick. Steering and brakes are far too crappy in it...maybe if both systems were in better shape, I would be more comfortable driving it like that.

Re: Higher speedometers...
I try to keep the speedo under 50 MPH when doing a burn out. Going into 3rd gear like that is brutal on the tranny, and if you have a TH400, just going into 2nd is hell on it during a burnout.

Re: Higher speedometers...
I’m not sure what the big discussion is all about. I regularly busted 100 in my 68 when I had it. 350/th350/3.90 gears. Granted the engine was pretty hopped up, but not anything more than most of the guys here. I had a buddy that was a cop, got him to clock me a couple times, 108…110. Later I put in 3.07 gears and could do more, but I never had it clocked. I will admit that it is a little dangerous, but I was too young and stupid to care. Living in a tiny little town helped a lot also. I actually had the chief of police ask me to race the 1/4mile outside of town. Needless to say, I blew the doors off of his falcon. True story!

what does the tranny know if you smoking them off or just accelerating hard????? its even easier on it from the tire because there is little to no traction to slam the gear when it shifts. it will heatup a little more just from the lack of air flow but most burn off are short anyways. i keep pushing the 100 in the short truck but my tires are so crappy and out of balance it just shakes eveything violently. im do for new tires in the next month or so, i will be video tapeing the death of the old ones. |

Hey Andy, I just noticed the truck in your second pic only has 32.5 miles on it.

Re: Higher speedometers...
Yeah, that was on it's maiden trip home from the shop after putting it together. Shake down run if you will. I blew the engine the next day when my brake booster popped a diaphram and ran a cylinder super lean while pulling a hill at about 4000 RPM.
