I think you can get a good work truck paint job out of this meathod but you can tell by looking at the black or dark blue VW that there is no deep gloss to it. For Flat black I like the John Deere Blitz Black too. I sprayed my chassis with it and I really like the look. It is perfect for the suede look.

...how about using a "mop"? I have had some that looked like they were painted with a mop. Think that might work? You could get in the corners and edges where the roller might not slop it in as well?

Talked to my neighbor today about this thread...he says the correct formula is a 90+degree day, rustoleum (no thinner), and a mohair roller

You need an old fashioned cotton mop.The newer ones don't work as good.

My truck finish looks like....well-35 YO paint. My hood is mostly black primer or undercoating. For a truck like mine that will be driven off road and thru the trees, this sounds like a good idea. First hunting trip it will have the mountain tree pinstriping anyway. Mine is a low optioned truck that I have no intention of making a showpiece out of anyway. So I think I'll give it a try. If I do I'll post progress pics.

Most of your major house painting Manufacturers Duron/Ben Moore etc. Have their own brands that actually blow rustoleum away. They called them modified oils. Oil with poly in it. That's why they would self level. Have used them on kitchen cabinets/ bookcases in million dollar home no brush or roller marks but toxic. also on black iron rails lasts much better than anything you could find but it would over time fade. With the EPA and the elimination of oil the acrylic with poly like these guys are using they are the newest things. Brushed and rolled about 12 bookcase built in cabinets Lightly sanded. You could see the marks. Loaded up the HVLP sprayed the acrylic/poly finish it was GLASS marks were gone. Would not do it on the outside of my truck. They have newer versions of this they Call DTM's Direct to Metal. I was thinking of trying it on my frame and fenderwell etc.

The problem is claiming rust paint has been buffed and polished and now has a mirror finish is like claiming an old truck has "absolutely no rust".

I have two absolute rust free trucks(both have been sandblasted inside and out(primed inside out), even the frame(and then powdercoated the next day))! Although not complete old trucks, they are absolutely rust free! California rust free!

Lets not get away from the fact that this is just a low cost alternative for a decent paint job for those of us with more time than money. We all know that paying 4k and up on a "professional" paint job will yield better results than the roller method but in this case if you take your time and do it right it looks like the roller may blow the doors off the "you get what you pay for" adage. Im open minded...and broke, so I guess I will give it a whirl!

well i am a redneck i quess!!! i painted my rear bumper with rust-oleum and a foam brush.. i am happy with it !!!
i was thinking about using my shoe instead of the foam brush..but the hot driveway was burning the bottom of my foot

I had a neighbor in High School who built a 49-50 model Furd F-1 pick-up.He did major work on the chassis for the early 70's but ran out of $$ when it came time to do paint and body.So he took a BFH,a rubber mallet and some sandpaper to it.When he had it fairly straight he pinted it with a brush or roller/It was metallic purple metalflake/with brush-roller marks all over.He threw on an old set of sidepipes for stacks,and some rusty chrome reversed wheels and went street racing(it was the 70's).
A year later he had enough to have pro body and paint.

I hit the store today and picked up the implements for wet sanding as well as some mixing cups. I wont be able to start quite yet as my frame isnt totally degreased but by this weekend I WILL have the frame painted and start work on a test fender with the roller. Im going to do several sections with different colors and procedures but I will share pics as I progress. Good Luck Dixie!

I've got a carpenter buddy that paints his old Volvo that way...LOL! He is truly the champion of the minimalist lifestyle. He gets the paint free from his left-over carpenter projects.

Well I guess I’m not the only redneck around! After spending $200 a gallon on the cheapest Omni single stage plus the price of surfacer, sealer and hardener, it took a half a gallon to shoot the inside of the cab not including the floor…. I found that rust-oleum was only $25 a gallon and I was gonna need a whole lot more paint! I shot some parts with a 50/50 rust-oleum lacquer thinner mix and it looked great! Then I read the directions on the can and it said to use acetone… Well, let me tell ya! That stuff evaporates as soon as it hit’s the air and the paint lays on dry… shoot it thicker and the acetone gets trapped under the paint then bubbles up and leaves the paint looking like a sponge! So I’m going back to the cheap hardware store lacquer thinner. The gloss is ok and the paint looks as good as the body work underneath (hint!) I’m using an $11 harbor freight spray gun (cheaper than rollers, pans and brushes). To use the cheap auto paint @200 a gallon I’d be into 2-3K on paint alone… Granted I’ve got around 8 grand so far in a $150 truck but it’s not a show truck, it’s going to be a high school kids daily driver and used for hauling any and everything I need… I can’t see putting a high dollar paint job on it.

This is my thinking too, I want a road warrior not a trailer queen, I can't put 5K into a paint job for a truck I'd never get that money back on.

I'll do my roller job, I'll try and do it up good so it looks decent but I'd rather put more money into the motor and drivetrain than the paint if I have to choose.
