Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Steve, maybe it is not the tilt but the color of the column then, any black column and black dash pad got a set of black belts? If the column was body color or the dash was a different color then white belts. What color were the belts on one of the blue houndstooth truck with black exterior? If they got a blue pad I would guess they got blue belts, so if you got the black pad and a black column you got black belts.

That is true, but I don't think there is a question on any other interior color. On the other colors (black, blue, green saddle,) the seat belts were always the color of the vinyl no matter if it had a black cloumn or not. Any pics of an original truck with at tilt that had sandalwood dash pad and carpet? Mark (Hotfun) knows alot about this, maybe he will chime in!!!!

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Here are pictures of a truck I had 25 years ago. It was a real Cheyenne Super. Seats were redone, but I am pretty sure they were Parchment originally. Black tilt column, black seat belts, black a/c vents, black glove box. I remember the spid identfied it as a Super. I don't know why the glove box has a CST emblem. Did they do that? This truck was black/black, buckets, tilt, tach, a/c, short wide box. If I could go back and keep one truck from the past, this would be it.

Might be, Harold. Might've have been dependent on the plant too.

X2. I would have to agree with this line of thinking. It seems like lots of things were different from plant to plant.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
I have a 72 blazer in my shop. It is orange, with parchment interior. It has parchment seatbelts, a tilt,(black), and sandlewood dash top and pad. I thought the sandlewood dash was odd, because it doesn't go with anything else.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Ok Jason, I think you have it about right. The ones I have seen over the years and I go back to brand new ones was parchment door panels and seats were also parchment seat belts, retractors and the sunvisors. The dash pad and carpet were sandelwood. But they didn't have tilts that I can remember and the steering wheel/column were sandelwood. The last bone stock 72 Chey Super I had was without tilt and was just as I described with no black trim anywhere but the nylon houndstooth insert. I just don't ever remember seeing any seat belts and retractors that didn't match the vinyl color of the seat and sun visors on any models. So I don't think black seat belts are correct with a parchment vinyl and the black houndstooth. And your absolutely correct on the dash upper vent area matching the dash pad color. Every truck I ever saw had the defroster vents and that flattened color dash top area the color of the dash pad.
Now you want to discuss the factory air side outlet colors that has no rhyme or reason to whether they were body colors or black. That must have been an assembly plant thing or just running out of the painted piece and throwing on universal black outlet bezels. Someone may proof me wrong but this is what I remember seeing. Mark

My Stone-Stock Hugger-Orange/White '72 Super has Parchment trim (including seat, visors and door panels), tilt-wheel, Black dash pad, black paint in front of the dash pad and black belts. I am confident my seat belt dates would closely match the build date of the truck and I will look at the build sheet to see if they mention belt info. I have been told in the past that seat-belt color ALWAYS follows the color of the paint between the dash pad and windshield. My last '72 Super has Parchment belts but no tilt wheel. A PO had installed the tilt (not on the SPID). |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Is this for Cheyenne Supers only? My blue/white Highlander had a tilt, black dash pad, the top of the dash painted black and it had parchment belts.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
We've had at least 2 original highlanders that have had black dash and parchment belts.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Off topic, but what color is your orange Highlander? I see you're in Texas, is that the one that was on Dallas Craigslist last year, that has a dealer name from Colorado TX stamped in the rear bumper?

Infact, it seems that most replies have had the balck belts when the trim was not sandalwood. There are several guys whose input in this thread I hold in high regards, so I get more confused every time I read it. I think for now I am going to go with parchment (bucket seats, door panels, headliner, visors) and black (carpet, tilt/wheel, dash pad) WITH THE PARCHMENT SEAT BELTS. For one, I already have them, they look good, and I really don’t know what if not both colors could be correct. It will look sort of like this without the hounds tooth and chrome bling-bling.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
I checked my build sheet and there is no specific area that clearly calls out seat belt color. I suspect it is buried in one of the trim blocks. As mentioned by others, belt color may have been more plant specific and could have come down to what the assembly worker had nearby at the time.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
One more thing, I have an original 72 Cheyenne C20 thunderbolt orange/white with the parchement interior. It has no tilt and it has seat, seat belts with retractors, sunvisors, and the door panels in parchment. The carpet and dash pad and steering column(wheel was replaced severe cracking of course) are sandelwood. I bought the truck from the original owner about 15 or so years ago with 72k miles and it now has 94k on it.
I also had that 10k mile 72 Highlander C20, thunderbolt orange and white roof with the orange/black plaid insert on seat. It had the tilt wheel, dash pad and carpet in all black. The seat belts, vinyl part of the seat, sunvisors and door panels were parchment. So I think the tilt wheel may have made the difference to black items instead of sandelwood. But again never seen a mismatch of black belts with the parchment vinyl.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Mine has black belts, column, wheel, glove box door, carpet, dash pad and painted black between the dash and windshield. No tilt. Parchment interior. AC vents are body color. The interior is all original as it came from GM. Well... almost original. I had the seat recovered and replaced the dash pad. They are the original colors though.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
I think were getting to the root of this seat belt color thing. I am by no mean an expert on Cheyenne Super models but I have never seen GM mismatch the seat belt color on any blue, green, or saddle colors by using black seat belts. Now I have a theory because back in the 70's all the GM line data order books prove that the standard belt in most cars anyway was black and the color keyed belt to the seat color was a deluxe version option. Also they sometimes added brushed aluminum buckle ends with the color keyed belts. I would guess the black belts were more of an assembly line call as Dan and others have mentioned and the supply of {clean} parchment belts on hand and demand also may have entered the decision in swapping the parchment ordered, tilt wheel Cheyenne Super models with black seat belts. Even though I searched through the 72 GM dealer data order book it says nothing about seat belt color as individual options nor what to expect other than the color of interior. It does talk about color keyed interior in the choice of blue black saddle and parchment so ??? Again my 10k mile factory Flint built 72 Custom Deluxe with Highlander package came with the black factory tilt wheel, dash and carpet. Everything else including the three seat belts are color keyed in parchment. And this was plaid insert in orange and black. So I believe it is truly up to the restorer and what they have available to use.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Another thought, have we seen any Original Black Dash Pad/Black painted area in front of dash with parchment belts that were not Highlander/Custom Deluxe trucks? Could this exception be limited to Highlander/Custom Deluxe trucks?
Another point. Jason, your parchment belts are spectacular!! |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Speaking of different plants doing things differently, does anyone have a photo of a '72 built in Baltimore that shows the interior trim color? The examples I have (including my truck), the exterior color is shown, but the interior color is not listed on the SPID. My build sheet clearly lists shows "Parchment Trim" but it did not print on the SPID.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
This came up a while back, and at that time I pulled the black seatbelts in my survivor truck. They are date coded to the truck, and I can tell they had never been removed. There was still a thin layer of grease between all of them and the cab floor that I believe was used when assembled. Coupled with its limited ownership and mileage, I have no reason to believe someone swapped them. I bet it came down to what the plant had on hand that day. Maybe the worker thought black belts would look better with the houndstooth/Parchment combo Maybe another worker thought parchment belts looked better...interesting and informative thread.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
FYI, I searched other GM web sites (Chevelle, Camaro, Corvette and Pontiac) looking for build sheet references to seat belt color. They mentioned column and dash pad color as a reference, but nothing definitive.
I happened to be near where I store my truck that has Black Belts with Parchment seat, door panels and visors and checked the date code on my recoil belts (because they are easy to see). My truck was built January 5, 1972 and the two belt codes I checked were 47K71 and 46K71. I assume that means the belts were made in the 46th and 47th weeks of 71 (seems right). If anyone knows where a color code for the seat belt is located on the build sheets, please let me know. |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super interior questions
Late to the party but this thread caught my eye.
I'm replacing the parchment bench seat in this super with parchment buckets. Wasn't sure if the original black belts would be correctly paired with parchment buckets/console. Also, anyone with an orange super have a matching orange rather than black glovebox? Pics show the original interior: Parchment panels/seat/headliner with black wheel/column/belt/dash pad/glovebox/and dash immediately below the windshield. AC vents orange to match dash.
