Looking at a '63 schlong bed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Went on a business lunch today and one of the guys mentions he has a '63 schlong bed that his wife has been nagging him to get rid of. He bought is around '98 with intentions to fix it up with his son and it has sat under his carport from the day they brought it home. I went by his house on my way home from work and took a look. It's a no frills, small window, 283, three speed on-the-column, two wheel drive, manual/manual truck with a clean title. Overall pretty straight, bed was nice, tailgate nice, no visible rust-through in the cab, just the front fenders near the doors where rotted out. There was a receipt for a complete engine rebuild in '97, one year before it was bought and parked so that's a plus. I also love orange/white so it kind of had my attention. It would be a great starting point for a solid patina'd driver. He mentioned $1800 but if I had looked without him throwing out a price I would have offered $800. Not sure if I'll make an offer at all but I'm considering it. What do y'all think?

looks like a nice, solid truck. If you are looking for a restoration project or a cool daily beater, you should ABSOLUTELY consider that truck. The motor being rebuilt already is a big plus, and the apparent integrity of the truck as a whole is really not that common. i think even at the price he threw out, you would be ok.
You will be better off with a solid truck that cost more than you wanted to spend, than an inexpensive truck you'll never be happy with.

it looks good for sitting all those years but i guess a real deciding factor for me would be how well will it run and how strong is the clutch and of course you will have to go through the brakes when it comes down to a real offer.

There is a stack of maintenance records from right before it was parked so chances are fair clutch is good. I'd say at a minimum I would need to fix this stuff to drive anywhere:

seat repair
brakes
tune-up and carb rebuild
fuel system cleaning
tires
exhaust (mufflers rusted out)
fluids

Then, as time and funds allow:

disc brakes and power
much lower
white walls
power steering
trans swap

IMO, $1800 is a great price from what I can see and cant see.

The motor rebuild in 97 doesnt matter at all, THAT"S 14 YEARS AGO! might as well have a 48 yo engine.

One more thing:

From the looks of the pictures, that thing looks like it's never been molested. Hard to put a price on that, especially when it'll save you hours and hours of scouring the wrecking yards looking for the missing parts. That dash looks beautiful, and the horn button is cherry.

Love the factory red/white color combo, too.

It's certainly worth the eighteen, I'd offer a thousand and go from there. I do agree with protrash64 the engine should be alot cleaner with the rebuild! It does'nt look like its been apart at all. Let us know the outcome.

Hay Gimmy if that truck was here in Moreno valley or riverside area it would go for 2000.00 here3 for such a straight truck the repop fenders are only 269.00 and the orange and white wow

I saw "Schlong bed" on another forum, pinstriped onto a longbed tailgate and it stuck with me

The price is definitely fair, but I'm not technically in the market right now so it would have to be REALLY fair to make a deal. I think he just wants to see it go to a good home, so maybe we'll make it work.

I like the fact that it looks pretty original and complete. My '63 was kind of like that when I bought it, so, you know, I'd say go for it.
