Not really, I almost never hit the clutch brake. Sometimes I even give it a little throttle on the second push on the clutch{on an upshift}. The only time I use the clutch brake is to go from neutral into gear and if I get hung-up between gears when the splitter or selector act up.

Re: 4 speed transmission rebuild kit

A little tip from me. 47 was the last year for that type of transmission. You had to double clutch through all the gears just to shift. When the shifter is in neutral give it a little blip of the gass. Most people think of the later transmission and it makes it hard to find parts for. I am going to contact somebody on it because I have a 47 chevy. Same transmission was used in both of our trucks. I would defiantly look at the gears but don't rebuild unless absolutely needed.

Not an sm-420 unless it had a conversion don latter. If it has a lever on the side to engage reverse you need to look up a kit for a Gkt-134. Do some siriuse research on this but the sm-420 never had the lever on the shifter for reverse. The Gkt-134 was actualy made by chevy and not Muncie.

Interesting. Mine has the lever attached to the shifter you have to pull up on to put in reverse. It is most definitely a 47 GMC not a 48 or later.

Re: 4 speed transmission rebuild kit

Only reason I knew that was because I have a 47 chevy. You should know that it's not synchronized at all that's why your having a hard time shifting it. Your suposed to double clutch through all the gears though if your good you dont have to. It's hard to find a kit for but I'm sure you can find one on google if you look long enough. All I have found is a gasket kit on chevsofthe40s. I went through about 6 weeks of searching and still am for mine.
