Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Looked at the other dead lifter. Its was the intake. The new fail is the exhaust side. In wondering if the lifter didn't hang shut, seem to be an issue with comp retro fit lifters?

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

So these are comp retrofit hydraulic roller lifters?
Was the rocker arm loose on this lifter when you took it out?
The rest look 100% perfect?

Yes the retro fit comp cams lifter. The rest looked ok.
Nothing was loose.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

My next question is are those comp cams lifters?

Called them today and they said said they use a clip or E ring retainer.

This creates more questions than answers...

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

I had that happen once as well checked the oil like always before running down the track (it was very sunny that day) and I seen gold sparkles in the oil . Loaded it back up on the trailer went home cut open the oil filter and got sick to my stomach. The culprit was a broken valve stem no noise just a little lifter click on start up and went right away, no loss of oil pressure but made a mess. had to clean the block which meant disassembly. What a pain.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

I had a cam grinder tell me Comp claimed their SBC retro hydraulic roller lifters were Morell. But when I received them they didn't look like the ones I took out that were also supposed to be Morell. Wish I could tell you what Morell and /or Comp really looked like.

Like anything that builds a internet reputation and doesn't have a storefront name (i.e. Morell lifters) just supplies MANY storefronts with lifters to re-box. You really have to be carefull in the claims.

That said... if you can get a real set of Morell's you should solve the failed lifter problem,, ASSUMING it's the lifters problem and not something else causing the lifter to fail.

Obviously lifters aren't bronze so what has failed is still a mystery???

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

The retainers appear to be brass. But with history of this engine and passes. I'm pulling it out.
New rods and pistons.
Some port work.
Springs lifters and what ever else is suspect and beat it like it owes me money...

Oh yeah freshen up the th400 and get a better converter.

Oh and comp cams offered a new set of lifters at a deep discount.
The power of social media...

Is that 'deep discount' worth the risk of another failure (possibly one much worse)?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

The new ones are a different design, have a different retainer. Its a snap ring vs a pressed in brass retainer.

If the cam isn't hurt and the springs are junk, I can't blame the lifters either.

The 400 did have 100+ passes and 5/6k+ miles.
At this point it's still in the truck, and I'm kind of done with it.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

I cruise mutiple forums and people have been complaining about the comp stuff lately. Like stated earlier I would hunt for some true Morells. I've had good luck with my lunati, no track passes but I abuse my truckevery time I drive it.

Well, it's gone to Lawrence machine in Hanford.
Some better rods and fix what needs fixing and whip it like a rental car.

Re: All that glitters isn't gold

Comp cams sent me an Email $100 off summit price for a set of there short travel lifter hydraulic roller.

So some callies comp star rods freshen up the heads, new springs valves clean up the boogers.
Line hone zero deck and put it back together.
