I know where it's at. You took the shift lever off of your unused column shift, and slide it into 1st when its parked. Can't start the car unless it's in park, right?

I have a cable hood lock that uses a key inside the cab. I bought if from JC whitney over 15 years ago, they don't sell them anymore.

There is a strong flexible tube that keeps the cable safe between the lock and the firewall. A thief would have to cut it using a saw or bolt cutters up and under the dash to get to it, but it will take a lot more time. Inside the engine bay, the hood lock has a switch, that I wired to a relay to interupt the HEI. They would have to break into the engine bay to bypass the relay.

Probably before they would try to break into the engine bay, they would try to hotwire the truck from inside the cab, but all it would do is crank and crank and eventually flood the engine. The starter noise alone would act as a good alarm

Even with this though, I am strongly thinking of having a Lojack installed. Too much time, money, and history in my truck to risk.

Isn't the purple wire just a momentary contact in the ignition switch to the starter? I really don't know. I'm asking because; if you put a momentary push button in series with the purple wire to push when starting the truck won't that make it a bit tricker to start? Or even a momentary switch with a toggle switch to start. I'm thinking make it as tricky as possible to start it, but still keeping it relativity simple for you to start it. In my '51 I'm using a hidden proximity switch to drive a relay to start the truck, and a toggle switch to turn on the accessories; such as the fuel pump and other such things that need to be on with the truck. So unless the thief knows what a prox is and looks like they will have no idea what to do.

I once saw a key operated valve that you put into the brake system. You step on the brake, turn the valve with a key and the brakes are locked until you use the key to release the brakes. To make it even harder, the key was circular no-tamper type. A similar valve cutting the fuel would also be good. Anyone heard of this?

I have heard of it. But it was many years ago. 20 maybe? Not sure where. I think it was Car Craft or Hot Rod Mag.

Our trucks are so easy to hot wire that the shut-offs, relays and other smart moves can turn out to be more trouble for the owner than the potential thief. Some alarm/kill systems can be very good protection ($$$) and there always is Lojak ($$$). Our home location is about a zero threat for theft, but here are some things done with the trucks that go out into the cruel world.

Coated chain/lock for hood (stored inside hood for use when the truck will be sitting exposed for any time under risky conditions) - plus - easier disconnect battery ground cable (remove and stow in plastic baggie in Kleenex box under seat) - plus - hidden kill switch for electric fuel pump (any thief that gets past the first two will only go a short distance). Some may laugh, but in some conditions and for discouragement of the less persistent thieves, I also use a high quality (truck sized) "CLUB" on the steering wheel. Not at all sophisticated - but inexpensive, and have not lost any trucks yet.
