Mine was too loud so I added a Turbo...
I would vote for Magnaflow also they sound great, you can probably even dump them but like said if you get them out back they will be quieter. No drone

I don't like any mufflers dumping out under the body. I used to like Flowmasters and still do. I like variety and run different mufflers on different vehicles. I want a retro sound in my '67 SWB and will be running Powerstick chambered mufflers. I have the 6" round Dynamax mufflers with 3" pipes on another truck. Walker used to make some favorites,Red Line Zs (turbos) and Turbo Tubes (chambered). I wish they still made those. My '72 K2500 has had the Flowmasters on there with exhaust run all the way out since 2004. I have driven that all over the place and can't imagine the sound getting on anyone's nerves. I never even had a radio in it. I never run quiet stock exhaust and these are a happy medium between quiet and loud. When I open it up I just hear motor up front and it sounds great out back

My last two cars were pretty loud and now I'm over it. With my Blazer that is being built I'm going with a fairly quiet muffler BUT, I'm putting a set of electric cutouts in front of them so I can have it quiet or loud.

I have an El Camino with headers and a high performance 454. I had 3" exhaust with Flowmaster 40's put on and it was brutally loud and obnoxious with full tailpipes. I then installed 12" glass packs in the tailpipes just before the exit to act like resonators and it mellowed the sound down, but still sounds good. I just put Magnaflows on my 67 Olds 442 and they sound great.

Question for all of the Magnaflow owners...which of their mufflers are you running? Or are they all similar in sound? Does anyone have video of a vehicle running them under hard acceleration? I think this is the route I m going to go on my '63, but would like to hear the under hard acceleration. The drone of the Flowmaster 40s is getting to me too.

Just got the 50 series two weeks ago I hate it .still got the drone but not as loud as the 40 series. Should have got magna flow or even headman turbo mufflers.

I like Dynomax Super Turbos but I don't dig loud exhaust. I think a big cam sounds great through some turbo mufflers. I'll shoot a video tomorrow of my El Camino. Don't rule out a big single exhaust either, My 87 crewcab has a warmed up 454 through a 3" single exhaust with largest Magnaflow muffler. It sounds good too. Don't be afraid to think outside the box....

You are going to get a ton of different opinions about which muffler to run and it's all good info but here is what I found helps a lot with interior noise/drone from your exhaust regardless of which muffler you choose:
- Run the exhaust all the way out to the back - Make sure to use quality rubber isolated exhaust hangers (not the muffler shop metal arm with small rubber gasket) this goes a long way in keeping sound and vibration from the exhaust from entering the cab I have found the Flowmaster 50 series to be a great way to quiet down the drone from inside but still provide that 40 series flowmaster sound outside the truck

I have flowmaster 40's and they were a lil loud but i added a shorty 8" glasspack in front of the Muffler and Man ....I love then now.

One thing to think about as you build your exhaust system. The whole principal of opening it up is to lower backpressure and make it more efficient. If you add glasspacks or resonators in front of your Flowmasters or your Magnaflows, the back pressure has been increased and the efficiency decreases. I gave up my flowmasters and went with the Magnaflow for a smoother sound and still has a flow characteristic of a Flowmaster.

If it is canceling the noise, it is doing it with a reversion of the exhaust gases, which in turn is creating a backpressure. However slight it may be. There is another way to do the exhaust if you want to try it. It involves no mufflers and the use of "J" tubes, which are tubes welded onto the exhaust close to the rear exit point and they make a pressure bubble that helps to cancel loud noise. The "J" tube is welded to the side of the pipe under the vehicle.

I run Dynomax Super Turbos, 3" mandrel bent tubes with an X pipe. A well insulated cab also. Quiet to drive, and respectable sound when you're on it. I also have a 4/7 swap roller that improves harmonics of the motor. .02

I run Summit El Cheapo Turbos that terminate at the end of the 12 foot bed. It not obnoxious at idle but not quiet either. The cab is quiet. Worth every penny.

My exhaust isn't done yet, but I just installed an X type cross over then stuffed the flowmaster 40's on the pipes with about 18" behind that some more pipe. The idea was just to have something on there when I first got it on the road. I don't mind the rumble when I drive it, but HATE the drone when it is at idle and in gear, backing out of the driveway and at the lights. It makes the rear window buzz like a bazooka bass rattling a loose license plate.
My plan is to finish running the exhaust out behind the rear tires. I already have most of the pipe. But I'm debating on keeping the 40's. My Jimmy has some cheapo summit sonic turbos, and thats what I ran on my truck before the restoration, and I like them. So I might switch back to the sonic turbo style.

Old thread, just for the heck of it as I'm currently dwelling on my newly discovered recently purchased all aluminum-very-expensive-radiator cracks.... But that's for another thread. I bought my 1972 custom/10 from my ex girlfriends father. Pretty much stock with 70,000 on a 10 year old rebuild.this was in 2004. First thing I did,pull all smog related equip. Since I removed piping and altered dimensions of tailpipes due to removal of cats. I figured how short can I make his exhaust,with the mindset of a teenager thinking shortest distance of anything was a straight line,I.e. exhaust gases out faster meant intake mixtures faster...am I right? Lol. So I installed hedman long tube headers ending in 3" collectors, feeding 18" of 3" pipe,attached to flow master "super 40" with 90° turndowns. Which put the outlet almost directly underneath the cab. I could set off car alarms on the other side of a four lane street. There's no sneaking home at 2 in the morning with exhaust like that. At the time my girlfriend a block and a half away, when I "went home" for the night meaning going downtown with the boys,she would stand on her front porch and could literally hear me drive where ever it was in town and turn off my truck. When she told me she knew I didn't go home I figured I had a rat in the pack so to say, low and behold I was the rat...lol. No harm no foul. That lasted about 6 months til I couldn't hear my newly installed stereo even at the max. setting. So I had them relocated to under the bed with 3" turnouts in front of rear tires. Still really loud,just not in the cab where I'm at! Lol

Flowmaster 50 series out the back will make a huge difference. I've put thousands of miles on my Corvette with headers and flowmaster 50's. I love the muted rumble of the Flowmasters, and they still make noise when you get on it.
