Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
I bought it of ebay but it came from Heidt's Hot Rod Shop. It comes as a bolt on kit with a little welding required. The diff bracket and panhard bar bracket need welding. Here some pics of the install i did last winter.

Here are some pics of modification that personify this project to me. High mounted third brake light. Steering column out of a 85 Chevy van. Brake booster and pedal setup out of 99 Chevy van and a custom aluminum rad.

I have a question about the column and the pedals. Ok, I have a column out of a 92 truck, and it has all the goodies, tilt, cruise (will be running a 5.3L), signals, pulse wipers and shifter....will I be able to use this or will it be to long??? It also look like you used the orginal mounting bracket on the column and bolted it to the dash??? As for the pedal assembley.....would one from an older van say 92-95 work also??? And were these full sized vans or the astros??? Tim |

The vortec max came out a few years back. You got the 6.0L in a half ton instead of the 2 smaller V8's.
Came with a fe other options, larger mirrors, tranny, brakes. All that good stuff. |

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
mine is from a 2007 LQ9 6.0 motor, the max was a higher performance version of the 6.0, 387 hp if I remember right. the max cover has vortec Max on it. theese covers are available from your local chevy dealer and sometimes on ebay. it was around 120 -150 for all 3 pieces.

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
Nice looking project man! I really like the fuel door on the fender! I also used the same tilt hood kit, man I really like it way better then the factory hinged hood.

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
Thanks Cal 58, I appreciate the positive comments. I found that the flip hood kit took a lot of fine tunning to get it work right with my truck. The Canadien GMC truck are not built quite the same has the American ones. It also won't open as much as the Chevy one because the front of the hood hits the bumper grill bar.

Here is the dash. Still haven't figured out where to put high beam and signal light indicators.

Here some random pictures taking over the last three years. One with the body on the original frame and an other one siting on cliped frame. See the height difference.

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
I am going to clip my 55 with a camaro subframe. Did you move the front axle centerline forward when you did yours? If so how much? By looking at the one side view pic of your truck front wheel looks pretty centered. But pic was at an angle so its hard to tell.

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
How much clearance does stock radiator have to camaro steering box? Do you have any close up pics of front wheel in fender opening? My stock 55 looks like the axle centerline needs to be moved forward about an inch when i do the camaro clip.

Re: 55 2nd serie GMC
What i did was to mesure 114" (original wheel base) from the center of rear axle, then drew a chalk line on the floor below the clip front axle, with a couple pieces of string and a bar attached to the upper control arm i line up the front axle center line with the chalk mark on the floor, then welded the frame. The rad cleared the steering box a good 1/4 inch. Sorry i don't have new pictures of the front wheel and fender clearance. The body is off the modified frame and back to the original one right now.
