Re: HRSaR
Man, I have to say that I love your new tow truck. It is great that you were able to find one in this great of shape. Keep it up and know that we will be sorry to lose you in Alaska when you leave the Army next year.

Re: HRSaR
Wow talk about a survivor... this rig sat out in the snow all winter long, without anything being done to it.
I went out the other day with an extension cord and battery charger, but before I hooked all that up I gave the key a turn and it cranked right up!! It ran about as smoothly as a V8 with only 3 pistons, but it started and ran. I pulled all the spark plugs, 2 were wet and smelled like gas, but all of them were pretty well caked with carbon. Threw them on the bench grinder wire wheel and put them back in the truck, one crank of the key, and it started and ran so smoothly I almost didnt realize it was running.... took a pic of numbers stamped on the block, I think this is the ID number for it.... Soooo Flint, MI.... 23 May .... 283 ?? Anyways the plan for this at the moment is to enjoy driving it while paying attention and figuring out what all it will need to make the trip down south this summer. Thanks for looking guys, more to follow on this bad boy soon (like mid June)

Just what my research shows....but its from online sites I normally use. I've got some reference material at home I can check also. Casting # would be a big help.

Re: HRSaR
I used my iPhone camera, snapped a pic and now it is saved so i don't have to look again. But first I had to spray some cleaner back there and scrub some grime away with a towel before i could read the letters.

Gotta see if a photo will show up of something I found Saturday too.... Quote:
Quote:
I know !! ************************************************************************************ My actual start date on working on this rig isnt officially until 16 June, but I realized that when I have 24 hour duty at work, that is a lot of wasted time between performing my duties that is spent staring at the computer waiting for someone to "like" something on my Facebook.... So this past Saturday I took my pressure washer and some tools in with me, and drove the Tow Truck in. Luckily our remote phones reach to the parking lot and I was able to get some stuff done on this old guy !! First off was spraying down the engine compartment with some cleaner and letting it sit for an hour or two. Then I sprayed it down again, waited 20 more minutes and hit with the pressure washer: The plan is to change all the gaskets before the epic road trip/ferry ride down to the lower 48 this summer, and this will hopefully help me spot the trouble areas before hand. I realize this is going to take a couple more treatments.... Then it was on to the paint... You guys that shared your trick of penetrating oil and car wax get a HUGE thumbs up from me !! I only did the areas that I had hit with the pressure washer, but wow... Just wow... In this photo you can see the ancient buffer I got in a parking lot CraigsList deal. This thing is a beast and sometimes you have to shake it to get it started, but I told the wife "I dont care how much these cost, I will never be without one again!!" It did such a job on this waxing task, that I cannot express how happy I am with it. I say if you can, go buy one...or steal one if you have to...it is just that great !! I did some other things too, like swapping out the old sending unit which was kaput, and started a swap on the old CB whip antenna to make it for the stereo I am going to install, changed some burnt bulbs, and identified some wiring issues that will be fixed in the near future, and gave the cab interior a good cleaning. Hopefully every time I have duty now, I can update like this. It will be nice to have some of the smaller things checked off the list before the official start date next month !! Thanks for looking guys !!!
