Re: 1965 K20 My Latest Find

Great find. Now to jump on the pic band wagon you really need to have a album on each awesome truck that you are hoarding. You only have one teaser album in your profile.

Man that looks familiar! Glad I could help a buddy out. And glad I got to experience such an original, unmolested truck myself. Talk about a beautiful running and driving truck! It just purrs. I knew if anyone would be able to do that truck justice it was you, Jon. So happy you got it. If you can whip it into anything resembling 654x4's twin truck (above) you'd be doing great. Congrats on getting it home.

Very nice!! What are your plans for this awesome truck, keep all the brush fire fighting equipment or remove it all?

A unique rig like this in true low mile/survivor form represents a big challenge to the serious collector.
Restoration vs preservation vs abstention. Hmmm... Go all out, or do nothing?
I know that a thorough cleaning and detailing with preservation in mind can be almost as difficult and time consuming as a full-blown restoration.
Perhaps a good scrub is all it really needs.
Either way, I'll enjoy any photo updates and progress reports as you have time.
Thanks Bruce ! Preservation is the direction I'm going. But a few necessary changes will be made along with getting it to the best paint less dent guy I know.

Had a chance to drive it again, once it warms up with the choke all the way in you can barely here it idle. Tires really nead to be replaced. Not sure what I will do there. Thank you again Todd.

Thanks Gilbert. Plans are to remove front bumper and replace with a stock OG paint bumper along with the tow hooks. Rear bumper will be shortened to look stock Barden like. Pump rig is coming off and get the tailgate on. I don't see any value or purpose to those items. Then a full clean and detail and paintless dent removal and polish it back the way it should be. Now if I could just find a Blue Crew Cab from Arizona Id be all set

That is exactly what I would do with it. Just get it back to a clean 1965 K20 long step side. The fire fighting equipment does nothing for me either. It would be ok if it was going to some sort of antique fire truck museum. What is the process for the paintless dent removal? I have heard of it but have not ever seen this in person. You may have to trade a couple of your 4x4's from your awesome collection for the Crew Cab to my son when I am 6 feet under.

Well, the buildings are so packed with stuff now between the trucks you really cant just go up and look at any one truck without some effort. Wish I had a better setup that way but I never thought I could fill the building

Im not to experienced with the process but its mainly pry bar like tools pushing out the dents. They have several other methods and tools I haven't seen or watched . I had them take several dings out of my black 59 and on the tops of those fenders were elbow dents or waves, I call them, from leaning over the fenders, that's all gone now. Did the same process on the 66 GMC Suburban with the faded green paint. It was tough just to get the guy to do it. He wasn't familiar with the Patina thing and didn't feel it was worth it. In the long run, pushing dents out this way saves you money when you bring it in for paint also. Just depends on what they charge. This one guy does it "after work" to make extra cash so its cheaper. The guy I'm going to use on this truck wont be so cheap, but I'm not painting anything on this truck so its worth the extra cash.

I figured that would be your response Gilbert,, that is one neat crewcab ! If you ever see another one your going to pass on ?

How much further do the hubcaps project than the sidewalls of the tires? I was thinking of it today while driving in Virginia. After all the complaints they must have received from 61-63, the redesigned new caps for 64, are flatter, less exposed to impact.

The entire cap sticks out further . When I unloaded this white truck off the trailer it took out one cap on the trailer fender. The 17.5 wheel center is pretty tall and these 3/4 to one ton caps are taller than the 1/2 ton caps. I will have to measure. Were they getting complaints ?

It almost looks like its set up for a person to stand on the front bumper extension platform and serve as a guard rail.
That's exactly what it's for, both front and rear. You fill the water tank, run the pump in the back, and then spray "on the roll" while someone else drives. Perfect for fighting smaller brush fires.

Sweet find!

I assume they were getting complaints. The narrower redesign must have taken the old profile into consideration. Though without the additional ribbing of the 66 design the 64-65 were failing from impact during installation. Wonder how many caps were scrapped at the factories till someone must have come up with an installation tool. A Service Bulletin might have been created.

Oh look spare parts! 2 hubcaps left on this baby. Located just off I-81 in Pa.

Not a take-off but looks to be original paint in great shape. Just have to talk him out of it... or find where he parks. Link below, see post # 194

Looks like the pictures disappeared from your post ? Anyway, if you put a straight edge on the rim the bead edge is level with the center hub of the wheel. Hubcaps stick out on these 17.5s .
