the 5.3L (about 300 hp stock) out of the same trucks is popular because they are everywhere and you can pick them up cheap. I've seen engine/tranny/wiring harness packages on ebay for around $2k, even cheaper for higher mileage engines (like 70k miles).

Also, engines later than 2004 (I believe) use the drive by wire system, which eliminates throttle linkages.

Package all of this up and you get an old classic truck, with a high tech drive train that has loads of power, runs very smoothly, has fuel injection, and gets decent fuel mileage - all for less than the cost of a crate engine with equal horsepower. Throw in an aggressive cam and you'll have a hell of a sounding motor that will run you 200k miles no problem.
I couldn't agree more, and drive by wire is a clean install and gives you cruise with a simple aftermarket switch. I cammed my 5.3, thre is a sound clip in my build thread.

I'm on the same page as Sweet70beast. 348 for me too. 348's are right up there with the flathead and hemi's as the best looking engines ever in my book.

I agree the 348 is a sweet looking engine.
If I had buckets of money I would get me a 409 and stick it my truck.

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

I have a mdly built 350 pushing 425 on the HP and 450 on the torque. I know, 350, the most over done, common motor but it's bullet proof and with the 3x2 intake it looks pretty good.

I'm currently building a 383 Stroker for mine. I have a 5.3 with a 4L60E trans that I will not use for this project.

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

I always thought an inline Chevy 6 with bore / stroke, Wayne heads, headers, Weber carbs on custom intake.

But, if I had one right now I would put a 308 Hudson with Twin-H power no matter how much firewall "finessing" I would have to do.

that motor must have been out or built for a street rod 3x2 and long block hugger headers are a true sign

LSX is the only way to go, lol. Whether it's a 5.3, 5.7, or 6.0,. They have plenty of power, reliability, decently cheap, and tons of aftermarket parts available.

LSX, no brainer. I went the economical route, 5.3 truck motor for my ride, but the sky 's the limit with the LSX family. I'll never go back to a carbed engine

Actually I had the engine built for me and didn't want to go with a plain Jane 4 barrel so I dropped a 3x2 on it just to add some retro vibe to it. The headers are hedmans but they are designed for a 55-59 that's using the original steering column so I've since removed them and have a different set on there now. The headers from the picture are collecting dust in the back of the garage, still wish I can use them but it would force me to run the steering shaft between the block and the headers, not a good thing in my opinion.

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

I like the 235 swap. They are cheap and look very similar to the original straight 6, but then again. If I was going to update everything else I would go with an LSX motor!

You got that right. If I were to have the engine of my dreams it would be a 454 small block but we are talking big cash and it would be in my 55 Sedan.lol We are talking 12 thousand.lol But that is a dream engine I will never own. I'll stick with the 383 stroker.

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

can someone give me a short list on these LSX engines..like what they came in......and would my old headers fit...I'm sure the intake wouldn't but what about the edlebrock carb I have.....I would love more power and could do the EFI and harness but a carb would be bolt and go..

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

kinda greenish... but other then that why wouldnt it? i know a 7' has the extra cubes but the ones i have seen built up dont impress me as much as i thought they would(stock yes they are still amazing) but the 6.0 in a pink 99' camaro that terrorizes the track i call where i home is unlike anything i have seen big block small block turbo nitrous whatever; its like the damn thing is possessed and doesnt know the meaning "quit pulling"

Re: What enging do you want in your truck?

quick research says crate motor?? I don't see many crate motors at the u pull it??...

I think the 5.3 looks to be the new cheap up grade with the 6.0 being second

check out this link for motor sizes and what they came in very good info

Of course you're right. Throw enough money (properly) into a 350 and plunk that into a 2000lb car that is ALSO done up properly and you can embarrass stock LS7's in a 5000 pound street car all day long (and you DID say a "properly built 6.0L"). There's a good chance that some (many?) of the "ones i have seen built up don't impress me as much as i thought they would" are not actually LS7's but rather, just 454's with a few similar parts. Anyway you slice it, a genuine LS7 is a formidable creature and it takes more than a few sheckles to achieve it's ability with fewer cubes. bear in mind that the crate LS7, while impressive, does not max out the performance potential of that platform either.
