Re: Factory cold air intake???
I believe this was a Nascar inspired option. Lots of old Nascar air cleaner intakes took in cool air from the high pressure created at the cowl. I would love to run that thing on my truck.

Re: Factory cold air intake???
Above the horn looks to be an Aux. Battery tray.

Re: Factory cold air intake???
All that "growing" kicked off in Humboldt Co. in the mid-70s. It went big time and spread to surrounding counties by around 1980. I read that in a travel brochure
Looks to be a fresh air intake accessory (possible option) offered on the 60-66s for the driver side. All I see are that one style truck and those couple pictures show the factory heater/heater intake area on the cowl on the passenger side. Looks like some one installed one on this '68 Chevy. And yeah, a whole lotta parts just in the one picture. How was that fender? That tray where you'd think an auxiliary battery would be is shaped funny and too small for a proper size battery, I think. Looks like whatever it was for laid across/mounted to those two slots

Re: Factory cold air intake???
Could have been a "field truck" and that was a fresh air intake option to help keep as much dust and dirt out of the air cleaner by drawing it in from the cab.
Since none of these trucks ever really had any "performance" options on them, I'd dare to say the idea behind it wasn't for cooler air for more poop... Gary

Re: Factory cold air intake???
That's pretty neat. Are those assembly manual pages from the 67-72 manual? It looks like a 60-66 inner fender in both of those assembly manual pics.

Re: Factory cold air intake???
The picture is definitely 60-66. But it kind of gives you an idea of what it looked like on this 68. The bracket that bolts to the core support that holds the big air filter looks like it was factory made, its not some slapped together homemade bracket. So I'm pretty sure it wasn't added on later, but who knows....

it's the megaphone option - the original owner really liked to hear his six banger hum.

Re: Factory cold air intake???
Well ... the ol postman brought me a surprise today . When I first saw this I cried BS but after some members dug up the proof it looks like it was part of a heavy duty air cleaner set up . Well now it's going to get cleaned up and chromed and used as a cowl cold air intake for a tri power 292 mounted on the drivers side and wrapping around a chrome power brake master to a custom built chrome air cleaner for the triple carbs . From a junk yard a 1,000 miles away .
It's actually really solid and has a bit of weight to it and should move plenty of air . Thanks 12secondnova I owe you one ! And at least let me pay you for your time and shipping . Grumpy http://http://http://http://http://http://

Re: Factory cold air intake???
I am pretty excited to have it! I also found more pieces on ebay. Now I'm just missing the bracket which I have dimensions and can here make easily to look stock and the hose from the air cleaner to the pre cleaner. I'll bet that hose is impossible to find alone or at all.
