Re: New old guy.

Looks good. Are you running an auto trans? I don't remember seeing that. If you are with that much cam, it may have to be more of a toy than a daily driver. You'll probably need a decent stall converter, which may kill any mileage. Fun for Friday and Saturday nights though!

Re: New old guy.

Well, you're not the first one to say that. Like I told somebody earlier, my first hot motor build, looks like I overcammed like a lot of beginners? Im in the middle of reordering, tell me, is it a no brainer I should've stayed w 225/231, 500-510 lift, and if u have Summit catalog what is diff between Howards cl110245-12 and cl-110245-10. They are so close, wonder what 10 or 12 means. I know Im asking maybe obvious ques, I'll talk to Summit and my machinist tomorrow. Im going crazy. Truck has to be more than a Sat night special. I want fast but the old ladys gotta be able to drive it to store. What do u think>

Re: New old guy.

The difference is the LSA (lobe separation angle) 110, 112 .

I would suggest you consider the cam I posted in a link.

Compression ratio is important. Did you ever ask the builder the dish volume of the pistons he ordered?

Re: New old guy.

Cant get ahold of hm this morn and i want to call summit to FINALIZE order. You sound like u know probably more than him. Lets say 9.4-9.6 CR. He told me one or the other one time when i asked. EVERYONE is saying .533 cam is too much. So...will u give me your recommendation of either Howards cams #110245-12 or110245-10 or113215-10. Do I want 10 or 12 separation? Or a whole other cam in tis price range.

Re: New old guy.

Interesting engine build, a bit much for the weight of the truck, at least cam wise but as mentioned at least a 3.73 diff ratio and a 2,500 stall and it will all work out well and be a lot of fun to drive. don't go any higher stall though, more is not better. Remember you are building a heavy truck not a car so mid range power is great not top end. Happy building, will be watching, keep posting you will get a "lot" of help here with good truck building experiance.

Re: New old guy.

This morn on corner near my house. Sign says 1985, 454 w rebuilt AT and trans case. Needs tires. Id say 7-8 of 10 after walk around. Asking $9000. Not looking for myself and no idea what these are worth, just thought Id snap a pic. Last night got $10 junkyard grille on. After my son watched for days me and my little bitty nuts screws and washers trying to get fingers through grille and use new brackets i made, (hes a garage door installer who thinks self tappers are the answer to everything) he told me to get out of the way and in one minute its like its welded on. Thanks Chris.

Re: New old guy.

After a lot of discussion w knowing people on this site here is what im going with for my first engine build. Today came the Howards Roller cl113215-10, .495/.500 w lifters, Pro Forms went back for these nice 1.5 Scorpion self aligning, narrow body rockers and the Summit dbl roller timing gear set up. Nothing too fancy, but with 3.40 ratio, it should get to the next light about as fast as I want to get there. Much work to be done on the truck itself but getting this done is about all I can handle at one time. It's a Heavy Half so sits a little higher than most, I cant wait to get top of fender wells down to at least the top of some slightly shorter tires...... Hey, trying to post a pic of parts on here and when I browse then clic upload, after a few seconds it keeps going to 'REQUEST TIME OUT, WAITING FOR AUTHORIZATION FROM CLIENT' Whats that about??

Re: New old guy.

Hope someone chimes in on this one. Heavy Half leaf Im flipping. This is how they look relaxed. Can I get rid of the big helper leaf on bottom. Im not going to be carrying any weight, but should it stay there? Maybe even another one too? If I take too many I'll run out of threads on u bolts. And I think the extended shackles I put on couple of days ago are going to have to be swapped back to orig ones to make it all work, we'll see. And..is it not too hard to replace the bushings without a press[IMG][/IMG]

Re: New old guy.

That's a 7+1 set up. I would reduce that down to a 3+1 if your not hauling heavy loads. I bet it rides rough as a cob unloaded.

You will probably need a shorter tie bolt. You can stack washers to reuse the old U bolts but, if you want to do it right, get new U bolts.

Re: New old guy.

Thanks Lonnie. so yo're saying 3 plus the big one, or 4 plus, but always keep the big one no matter what?

Re: New old guy.

Still getting it all together. Im going to stay on this thread, I started 3 more when I first joined not knowing what I ws doing. (Can I delete others if I started them? How?) Caring people at this site contacted me when it was obvious I wasnt sure what to order for my 383. And I believe they were right. Had ordered WAY too much cam and ws cautioned aboutcheapo Pro Form rocker rollers. Today I ordered Howards 111145-10 Hyd Roll cam and lifters kit and went w 1.5 Scorpion rockers. Narrow, self aligning f or my Vortec heads. Machinist will work them for the added lift. Then the Weiand air gap and Summit 750 carb I'll keep. We have Chevy junk yard here in town where I found dip stick, timing chain cover and oil pan for $25 I think. Nobody wants to give me good response on ordering Summit carb but Ive got my fingers crossed that it will be the greatest carb ever built in the world. (according to Summit sales guy) I like the Jegs tall cast, center bolt valve covers for $83. Ill get new parts in 10? days and go from there. Highest 2wd Ive ever seen, dont like it, I'll get this engine done then flip rear and 2in drop spindle the front.

I see they are the Speed Pro 12cc dish pistons, just right for the 3.75 stroke and Vortec heads.

Re: New old guy.

Much help from this site kept me from overcamming for how I'll drive this truck. I have ordered Howards Retro Hyd Roller CL113215-10, it comes w lifters. 270-278 adv w .495/.500 lift. I sent back cheapo Pro Form roller rockers for Scorpion 1.5, self aligning, narrow body. Like a lot of novices I kept wanting alot of lift and lope but it has been explained to me this setup will get my truck movin on down the road just fine while being a totally streetable daily driver. If nothing comes off the heads CR will be 9.6 w the 64cc Vortecs.
