I shift mine all the time from 2hi-4hi with no problems. Usually shifting in and out at around 20-30mph. The key is do only do it on loose surfaces. Drive 15 feet on asphalt and there will be enough tension in the drive lines to stop you from shifting out of 4wd.

Just because you CAN shift on the fly doesn't mean you SHOULD....

LOL. It was designed that way from the factory, and you're instructed to do it in the owner's manual. Have you ever tried shifting on the fly? There's no grinding. It just shifts smoothly. As designed. I wouldn't have bought my truck if I couldn't shift on the fly. Failure to shift on the fly would indicate that the transfer was not functioning properly. Why do you doubt the info that comes straight from the owner's manual?

This is a topic like locking/unlocking hubs. So many people think it's bad to drive with them locked and not in 4wd when it's actually BETTER to periodically lock them and lubricate the internals.

Re: 4WD Optest, SAT!

Maybe I should explain myself.

I know what the manual says.... 2HI - 4HI is seemless....

...I just don't like doubling my RPM to make it from 4HI to 4LO so I can "shift on the fly" like the manual suggests at 5 MPH.( this may have to do with the fact that I'm diesel) If I have to slow to 5 mph, I'll just stop. I usually have to lock the hubs anyways so stopping isn't a big deal to me. Not to mention the fact that it takes pretty severe conditions for a blazer to need 4x4

I try and do that every other month or so....I've noticed it's makes the hubs easier to turn when really needed instead of using the old pair of pliers in the glove box.

Sorry. Total misunderstanding from me. I didn't realize that you where referring to 4LO.

My commute covers 15 miles on wet highways and then 10 miles that starts as wet and finishes up as up to 12" of fresh snow. I lock the hubs the night before and then run 2HI on the highway and slide into 4HI when it warrants. Pulling over to lock your hubs on this road would be very, very dangerous.

Re: 4WD Optest, SAT!

No apology required..... My first post wasn't very detailed.

sounds like you get to exercise your 4x4 a lot more than I.....I don't think I've had a real chance to use 4x4 for at least 2 years now.

Re: 4WD Optest, SAT!

When I said I shift at any speed, I'm talking about 4Hi. I stop it if I'm going to 4Lo. And as Rusty said, it's a good idea to ease off the gas a little while you're shifting.

Not sure myself either, mine is an SM465 with a T221. Seemed to shift back and forth between 2Hi and 4Hi just fine at any speed, just had to let off the gas and not be pulling. When I first shifted it into 4Lo I was moving too, starting to slide back down a hill!! It shifted fine too while moving, but I wouldn't want to try that very often...
