I'm going to look around for some old school aluminum slots or turbine wheels for my truck. They are deep-dished and look classy. Not only that, but I can get 33x12.50x16.5 Dunlop Mud Rover tires at the closest Sam's Club for $135 a piece, the same as 285/75/16's. So why not run 16.5 wheels???

I'm hearing that tire manufactures and doing away with the 16.5 tire. That is why there is not a large selection of wheels. You may want to look into purchasing the 16 inch tires. otherwise you will be looking for rims in the future also.

Print off a picture and go to Les Schwabs. They can ID it.

If your going to haul, definitely go with OE steelies or slotted aluminum, that are flush with the hubs. The problem with the aluminum is keeping them polished, but of course I tend to be a bit lazy at times.

I`ve been hearing 16.5s will be stopped for a few years now.Meanwhile,they are adding the headache of creating all these new bling-bling sizes.I think Interco and BFG will always have them.Some others are hanging on to the 12.50/33s.

When I bought my truck late last year it came with farm wheels/tires (235/85-16.5s I believe) and looked like crap - alot like someone said in this thread. Like a fat man on a bicycle!

I looked around for a while, but had the same problem with selection and price. I then turned to a local 4 Wheel Parts store. I walked in off the street and by chance a guy had just returned a set of 17x10 aluminum wheels because the bead locks wouldn't stay put. I wasn't going to run bead locks anyway (it's a 2WD) and I got a big discount. I ended up paying about $100 each.

The backspacing was not where I wanted it, but they looked better due to the wheel width. I added some thin (1/4") spacers and that helped a bit too. Any more than 1/4" won't leave you enough thread on the studs, so be careful!

The issue regarding riding on the hub vs. on the studs scares me a little, too since these are the same way with the big hub area. I've not had any problems, but I've not hauled anything too serious yet. The most I've had in the back is about 800 lbs.

The first pic is of the original wheels/tires. The second is of my new ones.

Old school baby...and they still make the tires...and they are less than the comparable 16" hides...check it out! 33 x 12.5 x 16.5 on 9.75 x 16.5 Ansen slots. Get them used at the swap meets.
