Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Put finger over #1 plug hole.
Turn crank by hand till you feel air coming out (compression stroke).
When air stops coming out you are near #1 TDC compression.
Turn CCW a bit then CW a bit til your damper and timing pointer are at spec timing (like 6 degrees for example).
Now rotate dist till rotor is ready to fire #1 plug.
Lock dist position by snugging bolt.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Ideally the dist timing would be set before installing plugs so engine rotates easy.
I don't think you can damage the crank bolt unless you exceed torque spec.

You should review a good first start plan before firing engine. It is wise to prime oil pump and oil filter before stabbing dist.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Ok, so after air stops line up the red timing marks. Then rotate the distributor to make sure it is pointing directly at the post where the number one plug wire will attach? Need to make sure it is pointing right dead at it and not slightly left or right of it?

I have a really crappy hold down clamp I think. I have it snug as much as I can but I can still turn the distributor with my hands. It's not easy to turn and takes some effort but it still turns. When trying to start the motor though it doesn't move at all.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I thought I actually had everything squared away. I did prime the oil pump before the distributor went in with a priming tool and an electric drill. Ran it for about a minute or so. I think I just dorked up the timing and now I am paying for it. The crank is extremely harder to turn now for sure. It wore my arms out today.

Is it at all possible to get to top dead center and the timing marks be like 180 degrees out where they don't line up? Or do they line up every time it hits tdc?

I think your probably way off on installing the distributor.

PM or post your email and I will send you a PDF of how to properly do this, file too large to upload here

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

FYI, if you take all the plugs out it will be much easier to turn over. You can also have someone tap the key as you hold your finger over the plug.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Holy cow. Yeah I haven't taken the distributor apart like that. Plus mine doesn't have the vacuum bulb on the side. Just a straight cap. If it has to be torn down to that extent I may just get somebody to come take care of it that knows what they are doing. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take the distributor back out.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

That was going to be my next approach. Bump the starter. Seems like it will rotate a lot faster but maybe I can get it closer that way. Wouldn't definitely be easier.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

So is the only way to get this thing squared away to take the distributor completely out again? When I installed the cap this last time, the rotor was pointing back at the fire wall.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

You don't tear the dist apart, just mark #1 on cap and dist body then measure with tape make another mark and point rotor to that mark. Leave cap off and install dist with rotor pointing as shown in pics, it will rotate to #1 when fully seated.....simple bit your gonna need long screwdriver to position oil pump slot

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I think my confusion is that i didn't know the distributor had a set number one terminal. I thought you just worked to get the distributor to fully seat and then wherever the rotor was pointing when the cover was installed that was your number one plug. Seems like all of the above implies there is a predetermined number one. That's what is confusing me. These are the videos I used when I did it the first time.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

No I hear ya man. Lol. Just pointing out where my confusion came from. That's all. I am going to give it another go tomorrow I guess. See if I can wrap my head around all of this. Just hard for me to grasp.

Bottom line though, I need to completely remove the distributor and start from zero right? Locate on the distributor where the number one plug should be and then move forward with the above steps.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Does it make any difference at all that my distributor is a mechanical advance instead of a vacuum advance style?

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Yup, pull dist out and remove plugs so it's easy to turn over and locate #1. Next follow that guide I posted beginning with turning oil shaft to proper place like around #5, stab dist and see if when it fully seats it points to #1, if not remove dist and turn oil shaft little until it does stop in and point to #1. Install plugs and wires and fire it up.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Will do. Could I bump the starter first and find tdc that way, then remove the distributor? That way I don't have to remove the plugs?

Still confused though on identifying which terminal the distributor manufacturer has determined to be the preset number one.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

You sure can, you have a little leeway, but basically you want the base of the HEI distro where you plug the wires in, to face almost towards the drivers side fender. #1 would be pointed about to the steering wheel. It's not that hard once you find TDC. Just take it out, find TDC, make sure your timing marks on the balancer are lined up, then move the oil pump shaft where needed.

Look on the bottom of the Dizzy and you will see where the shaft goes in.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I will give it my best shot. I won't be able to get it facing the drivers side fender though because mine has a separate ignition coil mounted to the side. Best I can do is to get the plugs to face the drivers seat position.

I thought it was ideal to have number one to point towards the number one cylinder?
