Re: Lil 307 that could....

It was crud / carbon build up on the lifters. The original cam had 3 flat lobes so I know the engine is nearing the end of the line. If it lunches then I will be building a mild roller 350 and laying to rest my beloved ol' 307. Basically this is a "will it work?" type of build.

If it fails I'm out $120.00 bucks for cam and head gaskets. But I least I can say I tried it and it was a blast while she lasted...

Now mind you this engine ran smooth as glass and idled @ 700rpms. Blew no smoke other than fire up and made no noise with great oil pressure. HOW? I have no idea...three flat lobes at least 2 different brand lifters, Huge slop in the T/C and an almost completely restricted passenger side ram horn. Still boiled the tires and was a blast to drive, hence her name "Screamin'" I'm gonna let 'er go out in a blaze of glory...either today or down the road when she finally gives up the ghost... Time to go fire her off and break in the cam...wish me luck.

Re: Lil 307 that could....

Wow, sorry to hear about the rings givin up the ghost.... Was really int ereste in hearin how the 307 did. We are in the process of building a 350 that is VERY similar. All of which is on a budget... Bought a 350 10-20 4 bolt bored oout to .040 over. Had it line honed, freze plugs etc.... steel crank, flat top pistons, Erson 292 grind cam, 193 heads machined to accomidate bigger lift, performer intake for the vortec style heads. Serpentine set-up mod. Points distributor. Holley 700 DP.

All of this I picked up during the last year and a half. I have $100 in the block, $125 in the heads, $150 in the machine work, $590 in the rest. So for around $1000 we will see what she will do this weekend. Thw machine shop guy was suprised and thought it was a good combo. He suggested the cam said it would do a really good job with the heads. Thought the combo would go over 375hp. Here are some pics.

We are going to fire it off today. We will see.

Linky

The fan shroud I used is the original 307 small block shroud. I have a big block shroud that I was going to use, but it's opening is too large for the jeep fan. Oh well more for the ebay pile.

Re: Lil 307 that could....

...this 71 camaro rs had a 307Turbofire 2bbl with a powerglide 2spd trans. She weren't no slouch. No a/c ,manual steer/manual brakes, nothing holding it back.

My best friend had a 4bbl350/turbo350 72 camaro at the same time, we'd always line em up anywhere we ran across each other. I would always get the jump on him and carry a full car length until those 4bbl on the 350 got wound up at the end of his 2nd gear, then I'd pop 2nd and get a little jump again...but then the 4bbl 350 would just roll on by as he went thru 3rd gear.

...unfortunately a rocket scientist, here in Huntsville Alabama, doesn't understand how an unprotected left turn light works with on coming traffic.

HA HA Success!!! She runs like a raped ape!!! I still have to dial in the advance curve and limit the timing, install the relay and switch for the fan and replace a cracked exhaust gasket...but she runs and has a very nice lope at 700rpms...

Re: Lil 307 that could....

So here she be....dont mind the dirty interior and body...She gets used and abused. Once spring hits she'll get a detail along with the F150.

She's still running the factory ramhorns at the moment...Chevelle mid length headers and a 3" Flojo single exhaust are in the works once Christmas is over....
