Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
I think you may have a grounding issue, is the dash all working besides the fuel and lights? if not groun, then the power feed to the cluster, I'm pretty sure tha tis the only other things it could be.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
I've checked the power to the cluster feed fuse and I have power there.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
I checked the plug that goes into the back of the fuel gauge. It has 11 different elements that plug in back there. I checked it for power and it has NO POWER. I checked all 11 and nothing. I've also got a hell of a lot of static in the truck when I get out I'm shocking the crap out of myself.
Where would the ground be on the cluster?

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
THe cluster gets its ground from the wiring harness. looking at the plug for the gauges in the truck, on the bottom( wires away from you) the third wire from the left should have 12 volts on it. Now you for sure have a grounding problem ie getting shocked from static. You need to check the grouding of the frame moteor and cab, I believe there are seven total. One is pass side frame rail to cab, motor block to cab(1 maybe 2 like that) and a few others I don't know all the locations off hand, but you should start there. Randy

See the bad spot in the circutboard? That killed the gas gauge and all the lites that were on that side of the break. BUT-after I found this problem, the gauge still didn't really work right, and I found that it had been stuck in the same spot for so long it was siezed up. I switched the gauge itself and it works fine now.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
Still battling this problem. I posted a pic of the plug on the back of the cluster. I have no power to this plug. The cab is grounded by a ground strap underneath the passenger side of the cab. I have power to the cluster feed fuse like I said before, but not at the end of this plug.
The printed circuit appears to be grounded twice on the back. Would I possibly just need to change out the printed circuit? I would of thought if this plug had no power then it can't be the printed circuit (YET?)

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
C'mon guys somebody's got to have experience with this. I know it's an annoying post, but I need to get my truck put back together before Thanksgiving.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
Yellow69, coming off the plug in your last picture, if you follow it down the wires, there are a couple of black wires. Some are for the battery indicator and one is the ground for the panel. It clips onto the back of the dash metal via a U-looking clip. Make sure this clip is grounded well, ie.bare metal on the dash. After that, turn the ignition to the on position and check the pink lead coming into the plug. You should read 12V there. It powers the rest of the dash panel. Are your temp, battery indicator lights working? You said lights not working, but I didn't know if this meant the dash illumination, or indicator lights like ALT, BRAKE and stuff like that. Are your turn signal lights coming on when you use your turn signals? Thanks, Jeff.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
Here's a pic of my gauges. I don't use the alt/temp lights. When I have my turn signals on I can here them ticking.
Also I have no instrument panel lights at all. I did find that black wire with the clip on it I thought I had it grounded well, but I'll check again. Where does it go originally?

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
Both of mine went to the edge of the dash metal on the right(while facing the dash)side of the dash. I mean on both of my trucks, not grounds by the way. Anyplace back there with a clean bare piece of metal should work. Did you say earlier that you had power coming to the fuel guage terminal on the fuse block? I can't remember now. If you have no lights on the dash for turn signals, it sounds like you have more issues than just the fuel guage. Do the temp and battery guages work?

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
That is originally a 3 hole bezel. The gauges are all aftermarket. They all work, but sometimes the Tach does not read good. Yes I have no dash lights or fuel gauges. Even the battery light or the brake light don't work.

Re: Need to fix my fuel gauge
Bump of an old post, but I'm curious. Did you ever get this problem fixed and what actually ended up being the problem?
