D13 You can build whatever cage you want, some people only build cages for show and to make the car look different, its the track and the inspectors that are probably going to say no to the cage if you are running fast enough. I am in the same boat as you I want to be able to pull my body off with out making an extreme amount of work, but yet I want to build a safe cage and cage that is not going to take my life in accident.

There is no way it would pass tech, unless maybe you are running in a really slow class.

It depends on what your trying to do. For NHRA or IHRA the bolts would not pass tech. If you just want it to stiffen the chassis it would work fine.

I'll direct you to the NHRA rule book and that's all i have to say about this subject . The rules clearly say what will and will not be acceptable .

Yeah the rule book will defiantly give you a positive answer, when you do read it make sure you read it twice I was reading something in it the other day and it can be confusing.

Well I wrote a big long rant about sound engineering versus mindless inspection but I erased it because you guys don't need it.

I appreciate the answers and insights.

Guess I'll power my truck with the 194 L6 at first, theat should keep me well below the 12's (I'm thinking about 30's) and I won't need a roll bar, so it would be OK for tech.

hell just run that 6.2 oil burner. Think of the fuel mileage you will get while racing.

A lady I know use to bracket race a diesel mercedes and won allot!

If you want a removable body then the way to acheive that is to make a removeable body.Just join the body to the floorpan in a manner where they can be seperated.The only problem is the rear angle bars.Then the floor can also be removeable so that the frame (with roll cage intact) can be accessed.You might consider making the rear panel of the cab seperate from the rest and be able to remove the rest without disturbing the cage.

I was looking at it from the other way around. I did not want to cut off my floor pan and back panel, I wanted to be able to seal up the cab fairly well. But that's OK, now I have a much better idea what I can and can't do if I ever get serious about racing again. Basically if you need a bar you might as well build a dedicated dragster.

Just as an amusement, I think I found a way to do the rear angle bars and still keep the rear glass. Big trucks (like my C65) have the same basic cab dimensions but seem to have a smaller rear window, allowing the bars to route thru the steel not the opening.

Getting OT, but I think the lower area at the leading edge of the front door post is different on the big truck cabs. It has to do with how the front fenders mount.
I do think they use the same window as the small window '67 cab.

Different truck. Right now it has nada drive train, but I have 194, 3-250's, a 305, a 366, and could aways rebuild the 455 Buick for it.
Yes, the firewall area is different on the 2-ton. Doors will swap, so the A pillar line is th same, and I think the glass is the same too. But if I cut out the rear panel it will weld into a standard truck cab. And that would allow me to not have to put Lexan in the back, with roll bars. If I tabbed the bars in properly it would be a lot like the swing out door bars.

The whole purpose was to build a cage that allowed me to have a well sealed cabin with mostly stock interior. Oh well, guess I'll just build one of my junkers instead. If you're going to seperate the floor you might as well start with one with no floor, right?
