Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
are you sending the cab for blasting or just some other smaller stuff? just curious because that is when you really find out what you have. make sure to really check your cab mounts and door hinge pillars. maybe even do some measurements while there is still something left to measure. pics say a thousand words later when you are looking at the empty spot and wondering what it looked like before, haha. trust me. I only had 1/2 a truck left after blasting mine. lots of guesswork when it comes time to weld in the new panels.
curious to know where you will go for blast work. do it yourself or have it done? a buddy of mine sent stuff to a guy near Conrich(?) somewhere. let me know if you need his contact info, just pm me. buddy was happy with the work I think. the guy does it all the time so gotta know what he is doing. I did mine myself just because that is how I roll. what a mess though. |

The blaster is in Regina, Sask...not far from where the truck is currently in surgery. Ken has had blast work done there before so trusts that the truck will come back as straight as it was delivered....minus the cancer.

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Sorry for the lengthy and delayed update.
Summer does bring distractions but it also brings opportunity. I found this started and abandoned 1955 project so I scooped it up as it saves many dollars and much time. It's a 1955 GMC shortbox step side that's been rebuilt from ground up. New engine and springs and shocks and brake lines and and and! The cab is not paint ready but has been blasted and all sheet metal work is done. Frankly, I could not resist it...it was such a good deal.

Media blasting and epoxy primer done on front clip and cab. Notice the lead work that a master craftsman did in years past?

Lower hinge cage nuts installed and a bit of stitching on the cab corners was in order.

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
I am sure you are on it, but don't forget to leave a drain at the bottom of the pillar and also a bracket for the lower fender attachment bolt.
you are sooooo far ahead of my project. lemme know if you need to take a look at the frame I have to measure for rad support brackets.I am back from holiday now, so just work to interfere with projects, haha. looks good. and 2 cabs at the same time in the shop. |

I too made a drain in the a-pillar, after I saw a 1/2" water in it....

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Thanks for the advice and compliments guys!
A drain hole was not in our plans but certainly makes sense now that you've brought it to my attention. The brackets for the lower fender mounts are ordered and in their way. I realize a tab could be made but thought I'd splurge. I just want to mention that all of the hard work is being done by my high school buddy Ken, and deserves all the credit. Any parts or pieces I can buy to save him time I gladly buy! I visited him recently and spent a couple days dragging parts back and forth to the media blaster. Then we got to hanging parts for primer, blew them off, wiped them down with wax and grease remover to be safe. I sprayed a fair bit of the primer but got out of his way as he was far better and faster than I was.

have you tried keystone parts in calgary for tidbits? I have bought a few items there. door hinges etc. they have an online catalogue that you can log in under a visitor. at least you can see what they have access to.

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Took some Autosol to the grill and number badge and decided to get them rechromed. Pitting just isn't going to get a "pass".
BTW, in Canada 9310 is the model of the US 100 equivalent.

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Foot Stomper
This a good start, progress looks great. When I get going on my 57 Jimmy, I need to replace the bottoms of the drivers side and passengers sides corners. My plan is to replace the bottom metal with a metal peace that has 1/2 holes in a decent pattern, and then have a 10 degree slope from front to lower in the back, you know going towards the back of the truck. Leave a rectangular opening about a 1/2 high, that way the big sludge has an exit as well as a slope to help clogs on there way right out. Think about it, I will on my project when I can get it off perma-hold which is looking better all the time. Keep on keepin on NUT CASE

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Thanks Nut Case for the advice. Cab corners won't get drain holes on mine because the interior shouldn't see any water (unless I am misunderstanding you). The A pillars are scheduled for drain holes...after the lower cab to fender mounts are welded in place.
Spent some time this past weekend polishing some hub caps. I purchased 4 new Chinese knock offs, but I need a fifth one for the spare that'll be mounted in the box. I purchased these originals awhile back and found that I have one really good one out of the set so it's polished up now and only needs the center to be painted red. Does anyone know the correct red? Is it Flame Red from the 1959 GMC truck color card? Anyway, here are some pictures of caps before and after. I used Autosol metal polish and a microfibre cloth and my wife's toothbrush for tight areas. It took about 10 minutes to clean each hub cap. The dented hub cap is showing before and after the polish. It will become wall art...

Re: 1959 GMC 9310 Canadian built Shortbox Fleetside Deluxe
Well I decided to get the hood emblem and the 9310 emblem replated. Looks pretty nice now!
The passenger door is rust free now and all repaired ready for high build primer so it's getting fitted first.
