Re: Vortec crate motor?

All of the roller cams that Comp Cams sells for factory roller block have a fuel pump lobe. They will work with a mechanical fuel pump in any factory roller block that has provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. I've read that later blocks dont have the push rod bore drilled out. If you want to do a cam upgrade and retain a mechanical fuel pump, this isn't a bad way to go.

Of course, the electric pump is a good idea if you want to stick with a stock cam.

Gen 1 pre serpentine engines and Gen 2 serpetine engines use different water paumps. Gen 2 pumps are reverse rotation as the back side of the belt runs the pump. They look the same on the outside and will interchange, but if you run the wrong pump with the belt set up, you guarantee overheating or blowing a head gasket as the impellers are made to turn different directionsdepending on if V belt or serpentine drive is used.

All of the factory equipped roller cam blocks I have come across, 87 and later had the fuel pump boss cast into the block, but no hole machined into the block for the fuel pump drive rod. I suppose you could have a machine shop machine this opening into the block (?) Personally, I would just use an electric pump. It gives you more stable volume.

The value of a late model roller cammed block far outweighs the no mech fuel pump thing, I wouldn't bother with trying to machine the pump rod hole either, the electric pumps run a more consistant psi and a reg ensures that.

Re: Vortec crate motor?

I just found an '87 350 on Craigslist for $300.00 It comes with everything except the TBI. All the front accessories are included. How hard is it to make these newer parts work on my '63?

Re: Vortec crate motor?

Drop righy in! the block is a direct replacement and as long as the accessories are complete they too work as is. Easy money, but $300 for a builder is a bit much, well iff everything is there, I might go $200 as you should replace the water pump, alt, PS pump etc as used parts tend to bite you if not swapped, so a builder and brackets isn't worth $300 to me??
