Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Today I put the upgrade brake kit together and installed the brakes along with the axles on the 12 Bolt. It was easy to get the brake assembled once I figured out where all the arms and springs went. Spent about an hour and a half piecing together the right side and then 15 minutes for the left.

Seal installed the correct way!!

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I decided to forgo the adapter plate method for the engine mounts and picked up a set of ECE mounts. Just got them in the mail today. Man they sure are nice. I'm glad I bought them. I haven't been able to get out to my parents house and rob the auto tranny cross member from my donor 65 because of the weather. Given the pounding we're taking in the Tulsa area it may be a little while longer.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Today I spent some time setting the engine. First I roughly trimmed about 1/2" away from the frame upper flange to set in the mounts. Then drilled the four new holes thru the cross member.

It's almost like it was meant to go in a 60-66! A little notching of the frame and these manifolds would probably work, but I think I'm going to try and hunt down some Trailblazer SS manifolds.

After test fitting the engine I took everything back out and smoothed out my frame trim. I also sanded that rust off that was underneath old cross member brackets. Then I laid down some black paint.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I was laying out the fuse block for the 5.3 and just didn't like the looks of piecing one together of parts from mouser. After browsing Alien's LS Engine FAQ I seen the link to current performance's stand alone fuse block. So I picked one up and got it in today. I think this thing is going to be just what I was looking for. I'll post more pics of the wiring job when I get a chance to get into it. I'll post up my wiring diagram too that I made.

looks like you have your work cut out for ya on the wiring. Have you check out Tomlambs thread. He had current rewire his 5.3 harness.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

oh yeah I've been thru tomblambs and everybody elses build threads. Tons of good info. As much work as I put into laying out the wiring it probably would've been smarter to send the harness out but I really wanted to go thru it myself. And really it hasn't been all that bad. Just a lot of time. Although we'll see how I feel about it when it comes time to crank the engine over.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I haven't given up on this project. I have been side tracked b/c I've been redoing a bathroom in the house and it's taking up lots of time and money. This weekend I wanted to spend some time with the truck though. I spent last night and today cleaning up the engine and taking note on anything I may be missing.

I used rustoleum brand 500 deg Engine paint. This was the first I had seen Rostoleum brand engine paint, but I went with it. I have used dupli-color in the past, but after using Rustoleum now I like it over the dupli-color. The Rustoleum doesn't have near the overspray that dupli color does. And it goes on a little thicker than the dupli-color, which I like.

I saw another guy on here do up his ls engine like this and I thought it looked real nice. I decided to do mine up this way. Hope you like it.

Here I have it hosed down and degreased.

Taped up and primered.

First I did the aluminum with Rustoleum Aluminum.

Then the block was coated with just regular Rustoleum Red.

I also degreased, scrubbed, washed and painted the accessory brackets. This is the compressor bracket on the left and water pump on the right.

Here is the covers in red. Maybe long term I'll relocate the coils and get some new covers.

Everything is pretty much back on (loosely).

And because I've been dying to put these on since they came in the mail. I threw up the DT headers for a photo. Thanks to Tommy for posting these in his build thread. My wife was real happy when they showed up on the door step. They are the Doug Thorley THY-324Y-C and are originally for 67-72 ls conversion trucks but they seem to be working for the earlier models as well. Guess I'll find out sooner or later.

looks like you have your axle seals in the wrong way, I don't know if that matters but it might, nice progress on the frame

I'm sure it does matter. I thought the metallic band went on the outside?

Ah man I did put it in wrong. The spring goes toward the liquid. Thanks a lot for pointing that out.
